Hi Mark
It’s a Realtek RTL 8185L
Does it boot now with the card installed … What I’m asking is do you still require a fix (if possible) ?
You might want to try a full system update (connected with an ethernet cable) first.
–
Sorry Mark I should have been clearer I’ve had a hellish day
Once I removed the wireless card it booted straight into the live session then installed without any problem, after it was installed I tried refitting the card back in and it booted up but it didn’t seem to recognise the card, so I tried to re-boot again and it refused just a blank screen, removed the card again and it booted straight away, I’ve since re-booted several times with the card removed and it’s been faultless, I did connect it to the network via ethernet and updated but I’ve never tried the card again I don’t want risk screwing anything up now, she can get herself a USB adaptor if she wants or as i suggested to her to just connect via ethernet.
the next problem I’m likely to run into is installing her printer because she tells me it’s a Kodak which i believe can be a problem, so I’ve asked her to bring it in and I’ll try to install it, so don’t be surprised if I’m back on here looking for help with that
to be honest i can’t believe how fast that old machine is now, it always run like an old tug boat with Windows (which is no more than I could fairly expect considering the age and spec of the machine) but latterly it became unusable which is why I replaced it, I was gonna take the drive out and throw it in the skip untill my employee asked if she could have it, now I’m reluctant to give it away
Many thanks
Graeme
Depends on the Kodak model … any problems, post the model
now I'm reluctant to give it away :)
HAHAHA
I still have aproblem regarding wireless
I’ve tried 2 usb wireless adaptors that I know to be ok and I can’t connect in fact i have no wireless icon showing available networks to connect to
here’s an output you might find helpful

Are you saying there’s no networkmanager icon in the system tray ?
What’s the output from:

Are you SURE networkmanager is not displying in the system tray … it may look like 2 cables unplugged.
What is returned if you run:
nm-applet --sm-disable &
and does the networkmanager icon appear ?
Your right it was the symbol you described (2 cables ), in my defence I was looking for the usual wireless icon, I assumed that was just for ethernet
Thanks again
Graeme
… all working now ?
All right and correct
Thank you very much
Graeme
I figured it probably was, as I can no longer hear any faint Scottish obscenities rolling over the Cornish moors
–
All the obscenities were directed at myself for asking such a stupid question and not for the first time as I remember
But I’m well pleased how this has turned out, it’s not greased lightening but it’s more than adequate much much faster and fluid than it ever was running XP
Many thanks
Graeme
Hey, I spent nearly an hour the other day trying to work out why my wireless wouldn’t work … I forgot you can right-click the networkmanager icon and disable/enable wireless … so we all have our moments
Hey, I spent nearly an hour the other day trying to work out why my wireless wouldn't work
I’ve told you before if your having problems, if there’s something you can’t figure out, just ask
Anyway I’m almost ready to hand this old Deskpro over but there is one more problem that may be down to it’s limitations and no fixable but it would be nice if it could be fixed which is it wont play youtube video, it seems quick enough searching through videos but if i select one to play it just shows a black screen
Any ideas ?
Graeme
What’s the output from:
dpkg -l | grep flash
maggie@maggie-Deskpro ~ $ dpkg -l | grep flash
ii flashplugin-installer 11.2.202.285ubuntu0.12.04.1 Adobe Flash Player plugin installer

Latest Flash version requires hardware acceleration by default.
You could downgrade to 10. something.
I had the same problem and just replaced libflashplayer.so
See here for steps how to replace Flashplayer.
Can you post the output from:
uname -a
and say which web browser you’re using.
