Internet Connection Sharing - Support Question

Right currently trying to get to grips with this, but I’m kind of puzzled.

In the documentation it says:

The external and internal network cards cannot be on the same subnet.

Now, the net-mask for the laptop is 255.255.255.0 so would I then configure the net-mask for the NAS to be 192.168.0.1 to point to the router or how does this work?

I’m running the laptop via wlan0, and trying to connect the NAS by eth0.

I’m still a rookie when it comes down to a bit more advanced things like these. I know how to set-up static IPs, DMZ on the router and setup firewall rules… just need to re-read everything I read in that “Networking for Dummies” guide.

Where are you getting this info … I can see no need for a DMZ on the router.

and no that sub-net mask probably wouldn’t work … but I can’t see the need for a different net mask anyway.

I never ment I DMZ’d. I just ment I knew how to…

So confused. :frowning:

Well stop scaring me like that then

Which instructions are you following ?

Haha do apologise. I’m following the one in the documentation in the Ubuntu Wiki.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Internet/ConnectionSharing

Right from what I understand from that document page I need two network adapters, which I have.

wlano - Wireless card, this is the adapter connected to the internet.

eth0 - Ethernet card, this is the adapter connected to the NAS.

The part on which I’m confused at, is which one do I setup first? My lappy or the NAS?

The lappy is currently setup to use ICS the GUI way. It work for the Xbox360 no problem, but I guess there is a conflict somewhere seeing as the NAS runs on the older Ubuntu 9.10. Correct?

You could faf about with this for ages … any reason you’re not just installing a later version of Ubuntu ?

and have you tested that the box you’re going to use as a NAS can access the internet when connected directly to the router ?

Can’t install later versions because I’ve got no P/S2 keyboard to select the “English” language during the installer. Otherwise I’d have Server 12.04 Beta 2 on it.

Yeah I can connect to the net fine, t’is fast as well.

Unless there’s a way we can mod the installer to notice my USB keyboard on boot up of the LiveCD, then I’ve no chance.

So how did you get Karmic on there ?

Can you access the BIOS with your USB K/B ?

Karmic had a countdown timer luckily enough, which auto-selected English and booted straight into the testing desktop.

Nope, P/S2 keyboard only. I’m guessing there is a feature to enable USB keyboards in the BIOS, but I haven’t been in the BIOS yet.

You could create an UNATTENDED INSTALLATION CD:

But don’t blame me if it all goes horribly wrong, and you are left with an unbootable system … though you could always put Karmic back on I suppose … or get a USB keyboard

BTW, I haven’t tested this.

I’ve got no spare disks at the moment. Need to pop down to poundland tomorrow and buy some.

However, when I pop the 12.04 Beta disc in, when booted up in Karmic, I get an upgrade option.

I don’t know if I need to be connected to the internet for that though because nothing happens when I press “Upgrade”

You do make things hard for yourself

No disks
No PS/2 K/B
ICS because no switch

:stuck_out_tongue:

Will it not boot from USB stick ?

Never tried if I’m honest, but funny you say that. I came across a sweet little program called PLoP that lets users boot from a USB stick even if their BIOS doesn’t support it. Think I’ll try it out.

I really to make things hard for myself, but I guess learning the hard way is the best way. It’s good for the brain anyway, haha. Probably not for my health. ::slight_smile:

Ahh … you have a floppy drive then … if I’d known that …

maybe there’s a way to get PLoP or a SuperGrub floppy to load the USB drivers.

[EDIT]

Maybe it already does.

I do indeed have a Floppy drive. Well when I say “have”. I took it out, and put another hard-drive in its place, but I can easily put it back in because the hard-drive isn’t showing up anyway. :frowning: .

EDIT: How can we get the floppy drive to load USB drivers if I don’t have floppy disks?

Heh … is that a serious question

You can’t

Just get a PS/2 K/B … or borrow one and see if there’s a “legacy USB” setting in the BIOS that will enable your USB K/B

Damn, you make me laugh sometimes

I plan too haha. Gonna try speed up the process for this god damn switch. Perhaps I’ll be able to bung in some money for a P/S2 keyboard as well

Just a thought … have you still got your old router ?

Yeah, I have two of them. But they’re cable routers not ADSL ones.
