Lenovo G550 drivers

Ill just edit the whole meassage

ok i have a built in webcam on this lenovo g550 laptop. i have no clue of how to get it working. theres nothing preinstalled on linux, not sure if i was supposed to move the software off of the windows i had on it before but thats too late now.

i have tried searching for drvier support or software download for the lenvo cam which i think is called lenovo easycam.
im not sure what a driver is but im guessing theres no use for it if the software isnt on the laptop. seems like the free software i was given with it was all the back up was given, no cd etc.

i dont really know what else i can do apart from google lenovo easy cam. i went to the offical website for drivers but they are all dowloadable for window os. i cudnt seem to find a software page though. anyway any direction you could point me in would be good.

i dont expect you guys to do the leg work i ask for help all the time, time i learnt i think so if someone can explain what i need i can carry on looking.

Does it show up if you do a “lspci” ??

in the terminal? im thick as 2 short planks

Sorry, I meant to come back to this thread and forgot (I was sure I marked it unread… obviously not)

OK, it’s not listed as a PCI device, try:

lsusb

to see if it is listed as a USB device… and post the output.

According to this page
http://www.linlap.com/wiki/lenovo+g550
it looks like the webcam is a standard UVC (USB Video Class) device and should “just work” (the Linux UVC driver is already part of kernels >= 2.6.26 so doesn’t need installing)… try installing the guvcview package:

sudo apt-get install guvcview

or luvcview:

sudo apt-get install luvcview

or cheese:

sudo apt-get install cheese

or camorama:

sudo apt-get install camorama

and see if it works in one of those.

In cheese and camorama, you might have to tell them to use the Linux UVC driver (uvcvideo).

also, you could try Skype, or Ekiga.

BTW, DON’T install the BIOS update linked from the above page unless you are POSITIVE it is the correct one for your laptop, and even then only if you need it… you DON’T need it for the webcam… if it is the wrong BIOS update, it may kill your laptop.
