I recently installed peppermint on my wifes laptop and she’s amazed at the speed and she really likes it however there was one problem that didn’t surprise me which was some lables she created in Microsoft Word in .docx format didn’t open quite right in Libre Office and wouldn’t print, So I told her that I read somewhere that Libre office 4 had sorted much of the formatting problems and once I installed v4 everything would probably be ok.
I installed v4 on my own PC tonight to test it and it wont even attempt to open any .docx file, when i try to open I get this error message General Error, General input/output error
I don’t think the files are corrupt unless they’re all corrupt, they all open ok in LO3 except for a few that has some formatting problems, LO4 wont attempt to open any it will open .doc but not docx.
Does Google Docs handle docx's? (I've never used it myself).
I,ve never used google docs so I can’t really answer that question

That error generally refers to unable to read the file content because the file does not exists.
Are you opening the file from a remote or local drive?
Where is the docx .. and which PC/OS .. is it the Laptop that you had the networking problem with ?
the .docx is on the NAS which I connect to wirelessly, at the moment I’m testing LO4 on my PC (Peppermint 3), I haven’t installed LO4 to the laptop yet, and yes it’s the same Laptop we had problems connecting to the printer
At least LO4.0.2.2 in Peppermint 4 does .. which version of LO4 ?
SeZo’s probably right … gvfs fuse has a bad habit of not updating, so files that you’ve copied don’t always show up till the next time you mount it through gvfs.
shares mounted through fstab and accessed in the normal way are MUCH better.
I take it you’re browsing to them through pcmanfm>Go>Network Drives ?
I take it you're browsing to them through pcmanfm>Go>Network Drives ?
Not exactly I’m using the shortcut icon in Cairo dock which takes me straight to all mounted volumes including network shares then opening the .docx from there, I’ve also tried gigolo,
The odd thing is I don’t get this issue opening a .doc from the same folder
However I’ve just realised it will open if i navigate from LO4 to the .docx file via .gvfs which I have bookmarked in the file manager although I’m sure that didn’t work earlier when I tried it
It’s a gvfs refresh thing … as the NAS is permanently there, you’d be MUCH better off mounting the shares at boot through fstab … as far as your PC will be concerned they’ll then just be local directories.
If you want help with that … you know what to do
(leaves him hanging in the air, wondering what mood I’m in, so what I meant by that )
It looks like editing the fstab file is the best solution, but I have a few questions first because I’m confused (yes I know I’m easily confused)
Please dont think I’m double guessing you here but I’m just trying to understand how this can be a network issue when:
(1) it will happily open other file formats from the same location (ie .doc)
(2) it opened .docx files using a previous version of Libre Office (albeit with formatting problems)
All the above suggests to me that this is not a network/gvfs problem it’s a LO4 issue and although mounting the shares in fstab will solve the problem it won’t explain it
but I would appreciate your help mounting the shares whenever your ready
Try rebooting both the NAS and the PC … then see if you can access them over the network … if you still cannot (even only once), it’s not what I’m thinking it is.
Which version of LO4 ? … and is it the same from another PC ?
Sorry for taking so long to reply, I’m still at work so I wont get at this till later but just to update although I said earlier I could open .docx files from LO4 now I can’t, I just get the same error message, but I can open .doc files ok.
I have installed LO4 to the laptop and it’s doing exactly the same thing as the PC, the version I’m using is v4.0.3.3 and both machines are running Peppermint 3
Maybe something with 4.0.3.3 then, because 4.0.2.2 (from the Peppermint 4/Ubuntu 13.04 repo) works perfectly for me, even when I access a .docx throuugh gvfs
I intend installing Peppermint 4 on another partition on this PC, I could then try installing Libre Office from the repos and see how that works, after all this is not a huge issue for me at the moment and if it works that way, it might tell us something.
Sounds like a plan .. but don't rush into PM4 till you're ready .. I'm not trying to tempt you into it, just stating a fact.
I understand, I was intending trying out Peppermint 4 anyway so I suppose it would make sense to try it that way, I’m not sure when I’ll get round to it but I’ll post here with the results
