Moving Files From XP to Peppermint

Well, now I understand where the 81GB went. I do have to say this, at the time that we were installing Peppermint, you guys were helping me set up all the partitions. I wouldn’t have been able to figure it out and I was blown away by all the knowledge you guys had. I was kind of puzzled though by the size of the partitions, but I didn’t question it because I didn’t know what I was doing and you guys did.

Just to explain the drives a bit, the 80GB drive is probably as old as the computer, and the computer was manufactured in 2002. The 250GB drive is a brand new high speed drive that I installed myself. I followed all the directions on how to set up the partition. When we started this, the only thing on there was the backup file for XP, and I don’t think that took up too much space. Since I was installing Peppermint, I really didn’t have any intentions of putting anymore windows stuff on that drive, so I thought the entire drive was going to be dedicated to Peppermint. I figured that if it took me years to use up most of the 80GB drive with XP, it would take me years to use up the rest of the 250GB drive. If you guys think I should change the partitions on the 250GB drive, that would be fine with me. Again, you guys know much better than I do.

I don’t think there is any point in changing anything now unless your ready to wipe Windows in which case I would suggest installing Linux on the 80gb drive and using the 250gb as storage, my reasons are this, 80gb is more than big enough for a Linux installation especially one as lightweight as Peppermint, also it would make sense to keep your personal files on the best drive as you can always re-install an operating system in the event of a hard drive failure but you can’t always recover lost files so you would want your personal files on the best and biggest drive.

Anyway that’s my opinion but I would take advice from Mark or some of the smarter guys on here who would know better than either of us

Good luck

Graeme

OK hows this for a plan of action … as Peppermint 5 isn’t far off, you keep using Pepprmint 4 as is for the time being, make sure you’re happy with it and it does what you require it to do, then when Peppermint 5 comes out we’ll wipe Peppermint 4, repartition and install Peppermint 5 using nearly all the 250GB drive ?

Make sense ?

I think that’s a great idea! Thank you!

No problem

Now where were we before you got those “out of hard drive space” error messages ?

I don’t know about you, but I think I was in the state of disaster! ;D

Oh, I do have another question. As I stated earlier, the Pogo Games are really not that important, but after getting my pool game to work, I tried the Pogo Games, and it still says that I have to have Java installed. Any ideas? If it’s going to make something else not work, then screw it.

You may need to have icedtea plugin installed but I’m not sure enough of myself to ask you to go ahead and install it so maybe better to wait till Mark or someone more knowledgeable comes along

Ok, no rush.

Try running:

sudo apt-get install openjdk-7-jre icedtea-7-plugin

then close ALL running web browser instances, and re-open one to test

Ok, I’ll give it a shot in the morning.

Hey Mark,
I installed the icedtea plugin but POGO.COM still isn’t working. The program loads in but the games say it needs the latest version of Java.

run:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall openjdk-7-jre icedtea-7-plugin ubuntu-restricted-extras lubuntu-restricted-extras

any errors post them here.

If prompted to accept a license for ttf-mscorefonts-installer, accept it.

Once done … reboot … test pogo.com games.
I’ve tested a couple of games on my PC and they work for me … but I may be using the Oracle Java plugin rather than icedtea.

Some of the games are working and some are still saying it needs JAVA. Weird? :-\

I guess some of them require the Oracle java (ie. won’t work with the open source implementation).

While it probably is possible to install the Oracle version in Peppermint 4, it’s no longer as easy as just adding a PPA.

Can you wait till Peppermint 5 ? … or do you need these games ?

Point me at one of the games that doesn’t work, and I’ll see what I can come up with.

The one that I usually play is the Monopoly Slots, but it’s really no big deal. I can wait.

How do I check to see if all my software is up to date?

If we’re talking about Peppermint -

menu > System Tools > Software Updater

or from the command line:

sudo apt-get update

then

sudo apt-get upgrade

then

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Thank you Mark.

Any news as to when the new Peppermint is coming out, and when it does, will I be notified?
