I have got some you tube MPEGS - is it possible to copy them into MP3 format?
You mean you have some mpg VIDEO’s and you want to just rip the AUDIO to mp3 ?
Have you considered installing XVideoServiceThief (xvst), which can download directly from youtube and other sites and convert format whilst it does so ?
Which distro/version are you using ? … I know I may ask that a lot, but really you should mention that in ALL new topics

Yes, so I can make a CD of Beethoven and listen to him in bed instead of on the laptop!

Not heard of that before Mark- you tube downloader used to have an mp3 option but not there now.

Peppermint 3 on this laptop and Mint on Dell- it’s at bottom of my signature.
Your signature doesn’t say which version of Peppermint or Mint … that info is NECESSARY for people to tailor their responses.
See I can give you a link to a version of xVST that will work in Peppermint 3 (actually, no I can’t because I still don’t know if you’re running Peppermint 3 32bit or 64bit) … but I can’t currently tell you if it’s the best version for Mint as I have no idea which version/architecture of Mint you’re running ?
Would you prefer an application that you copy the youtube URL (address) into, then it downloads and converts the video to mp3 … or would you just prefer something to rip the audo from video’s you already have ?
and don’t forget to give me the Mint version.
WHENEVER starting a new topic, you should ALWAYS quote DISTRO, VERSION, and ARCHITECTURE
eg.
Peppermint 3 32bit
Mint 15 64bit
etc.
If you’re unsure … post the output from both:
cat /etc/*release*
and
uname -a
Mark do you remember helping me install Peppermint 3 on this laptop? I don’t know about bits so here’s the sudo thing:
melissa@melissa-HP-Compaq-nx6325-RH628ES-ABU ~ $ cat /etc/release
DISTRIB_ID=Peppermint
DISTRIB_RELEASE=3
DISTRIB_CODENAME=precise
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=“Peppermint Three”
melissa@melissa-HP-Compaq-nx6325-RH628ES-ABU ~ $ uname -a
Linux melissa-HP-Compaq-nx6325-RH628ES-ABU 3.2.0-51-generic #77-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 24 20:21:10 UTC 2013 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux

I would like something that I can just put the URL into ta!
Mark do you remember helping me install Peppermint 3 on this laptop?
I can’t remember what OS everyone who visits this site is running … nor can I assume they’re still running the same one that may be listed in their profile/sig
I remember helping you install Peppermint but without researching I wouldn’t have remembered whether it was version 3 or 4, or if it were 32bit or 64bit … but remember, I’m not the only person who answers questions on here … and there’s always the chance you’ve changed OS since I last helped
Anyway … your Peppermint installation is “Peppermint 3 32bit” … include that info in ALL new topics when you’re talking about the Peppermint PC
Still don’t know about Mint though … you’ll need to post the output from those commands again … but run on the Mint PC.
And which PC (Mint or Peppermint) do you want to install xVST onto ? … or both ?
This bit is for PEPPERMINT 3 32bit ONLY
Download this file:
http://archive.getdeb.net/ubuntu/pool/apps/x/xvst/xvst_2.4.1-1~getdeb35_i386.deb
to your Peppermint desktop … then double-click it to install.
Once installed, go to
menu > Sound & Video > xVideoServiceThief
In xVST, click the “More Options” button.
On the “Basic” section, make sure “Convert videos to Mpeg/DivX/etc…” is ticked.
and change:-
Output format: MP3 Format (*.mp3)
Click the “OK” button.
Back in the main xVST window, click the “Add video” button … paste in the youtube pages URL … and click “OK”
you’ll find the finished mp3’s in a folder called xVideoServiceThief_downloads in your Home folder.
One thing to be aware of … xVST doesn’t seem to like youtube video’s that are hosted on Vimeo … so steer clear of those.
And remember, DO NOT install this version of xVST into Mint until we’re sure it’s the correct version … thesed instructions are for Peppermint 3 32bit ONLY.

I’m amazed that there isn’t something in the repos! Seriously, 20000+ packages, and no YouTube mp3 ripper!
Articles linked to PyTube quite a few times (looks nice as an alternative), but I also found this page - 404 - PAGE NOT FOUND - with a bash script on it for a GUI-less way of doing it (using the youtube-dl package)
There’s also this Firefox extension - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-to-mp3/ - but the user reviews are pretty bad…

There was a few months ago!

I was asking because you might be able to shed some light onto why this laptop is having nutty moments- when we installed Peppermint- it was fast and efficient- now it keeps doing odd things- which I have been posting about recently- shutting itself down, stalling, vanishing icons, Libre Office documents always opening in recovery etc.
Anyway .. your Peppermint installation is "Peppermint 3 32bit" .. include that info in ALL new topics when you're talking about the Peppermint PC

For now just Peppermint as this laptop has a CD drawer and can rip CDs whereas Dell netbook hasn’t one and I tend to keep its music in Amazon Cloud player as its SSD space is very small- still not got its new HD put in as yet. I am also kind of loathe to as I like Mint on there- it is lightning speed on it! It also has some features I haven’t seen in Peppermint. I can also save the MP3s to the Maxtor HD and plug that into the Dell to play them.
First MP3 done! Awesome, thanks Mark! ;D
I used to do this way back when in Realplayer then Media Player in Microsoft- took about 30 min each one!
Ok why does it say invalid urls for some of them? What can I do?
I have one MPEG format- as it lets me use the you tube downloader- you mentioned I could download an MPEG to MP3 converter Mark?
Dunno … gimme the URL of one that doesn’t work.
There’s also this website:
http://www.flvto.com/
which can convert them to mp3 … but I’m not a fan of web services that do this, as they may keep record of what your IP requested.

Hmmmm…but I have the Mask Me- would that do it? There’s nowt in the Linux distro that converts MPEGS to Mp3s?
What are you using to download them to MPEG ?, as MPEG doesn’t tell us what format the video is … MPEG can mean MP4 including x264, mpeg-2 (like DVD’s use), etc.
Once I can get a file in the same format as you have them, I can find something to convert them.
I am using you tube downloader and the file I downloaded is in MP4 360P.
Did you figure out why the url wasn’t recognised by xvideo?
Can you give me a link to the youtube downloader you mean.

In xVST, try removing the “s” from “https” (so you’re not using a secure socket) … so instead of:
you try this instead:
Oddly, BOTH seem to work for me … but I’m on Peppermint 4 and a later version of xVST
Mark it is downloading!!! I am your friend forever! Sonata no. 29 is the greatest music for piano ever!!! Now I can make a CD of it- I wanted this version as it’s on a replica antique piano and they sound the best for nineteenth century music.
… not really my thing I’m afraid, there are only a handful of pieces of classical music I like, and I wouldn’t know their names if my life depended on it
I’ve heard it ALL, many, many, many times though (dad was a classical nut) … so it’s not a case of not having heard it.
I am a great admirer of Beethoven as you probably guessed. The world will not see his like again- monumental genius.
I am ripping the CD as I post this- a box came up and as the disc is RW it might not play on older CDs- not a prob as if it doesn’t I will give this to my Mum to play on her tv box thing and I can get non RW discs from the pound shop tomorrow.
