Need help on two questions about Linux in general for beginners

Hello everyone

I am very new to the Linux operation systems, I am planning to buy a new PC just to run Linux OS on it, need to practice and mess around with Linux and make a foot into the doors of Linux world, regarding that I have a few questions:

1-Do i need a specific computer requirments?, the computer I found its processor is “intel pentium 4 3.2 ghz”, is that enough for a Linux OS to work properly?

2- I am an absolute beginner, so i dont really know which Lunix to get (redhat, ubuntu…etc), I am going to be writing shells and get fimiliar with Linux commands thats for first, afterwards will be doing some pentesting and programming in general, so what version of Linux do you suggest and why? if possible could you support me with a download link for the version you suggested?

Thanks very much

Hi ZeroOne, and welcome to the forum

  1. Yes a Pentium4 will be fine, but it might help if you could tell us how much RAM is installed (and any other hardware) before we can answer you second question properly.
(by far the majority of hardware will be supported out of the box … and any that isn’t, we’ll help with)

  2. (provisionally) … I’d suggest Ubuntu, or one of its derivatives … if for no other reason than you’ll find help, support, docs, and tutorials easier to come by.

So for question 2, I’d say -

= 2GB RAM … go with Ubuntu.
< 2GB RAM … go with PepermintOS (Two)

HTH … if you have any other questions, feel free to ask and we’ll do our best to answer them

Dear Mark Greaves,

Thanks for the help, the PC has 2GB RAM, I will give Ubuntu a go

Thanks again.

Okey Dokey … good luck, and if you run into any problems give us a shout

Thought I’d nip in here. Ubuntu works great on laptop/PC’s with 2GB of RAM. My brothers’ on a laptop with a Pentium 4 & 2GB and his laptop is fast compared to when it was running Windows 7.

I myself run Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, with 3GB of RAM and a Core Duo 2.0Ghz, and I’m just as fast as my brothers laptop.

My NAS runs Ubuntu 10.04 Server, that has a Intel Celeron (1.3Ghz IIRC) and 2GB of RAM and it’s seriously quick.

That should give you a rough idea of what to expect.

Hope you enjoy your journey through Linux world.
