I’m slowly moving on but have now encountered a problem
Are you installing XP 64bit ?
No, 32bit, I’ve never seen a 64bit window$ install disk.
It did come up with a progress window earlier but I didn’t know what it was doing so cancelled out of it as it was stuck on 0%
Now it looks like it wont go to that part.
OK, it seems Virtualbox is detecting you have a CPU that’s capable of hardware accelerated virtualization … so is etting up the VM (by default) with suport for it … but either it isn’t enabled in your BIOS, or not suspported in your BIOS.
You have 2 possible options -
a) (best option if possible) check in your system BIOS to see if there is a setting to enable “AMD-V/VT-x” or “Hardware accelerated Virtualization” or smilar.
b) turn OFF support for VT-x/AMD-V in the Virualbox VM settings for your XP VM -
I’ve opted for the second option for now. I assume it’s possible to change it later when I get round to checking out the BIOS.
Dunno … never tried it … possibly ???
Personally I’d go the BIOS route if possible … think about it … HARDWARE ACCELERATED VIRTUALIZATION … the VM will run faster/smoother … and you’ll be able to install 64bit OS’s in VM’s.
I’ll sort out the BIOS in a bit. Do you know where I could get a 64bit version of the Windows XP Pro install disk?
Got another problem, it wont let me install it!
That’s an issue with your XP installation CD … nothing to do with Virtualbox.
Sorted it.
Tried to perform an update but it wouldn’t do it so I’ve downloaded SP3.ISO and I’m currently installing it/
IIRC, It now does the same from XP installed “properly” unless it’s at least at SP2 … this is to do with Microsoft Updates, nothing to do with Virtualbox.
Microsoft appear to have already dropped support for XP prior to SP2 … at least as far as the M$ Update website goes.
AFAIK I have read that they will be dropping support in April 2014.
I have got some XP programs I downloaded in Ubuntu and need to get them across to XP, where is the Drive 'C:' and is it easy to just copy or move them across?
All I was saying is that the update issue is nothing to do with Virtualbox … I installed XP on a machine last week, and the M$ site tells you you need to install service packs befoore M$ Update will work.
You missed my question in my last post
I have got some XP programs I downloaded in Ubuntu and need to get them across to XP, where is the Drive 'C:' and is it easy to just copy or move them across?
Doesn’t work that way … the C: drive isn’t accessible as a directory from within Linux.
But there is an option to set up a shared directory between the Linux host and the Windows client … somewhere in the VM (bottom right I think), but I’m currently not sat at a PC with Vbox installed.
[EDIT]
I think you need to have the Guest Additions installed in the Windows VM
See here:
Thanks for that, I’ll take a look in a bit, currently installing 117 updates, I expect more to follow…
XP updates ? … enjoy :
I’m sorry but I’m lost, I cant find the dropdown that it’s mentioning???
Start your XP virtual machine … when you see the XP desktop, there should be a menu bar at the top of the window … click Device > Install Guest Additions
