hi everyone,a newbee here,i have visited this site few times, and have decided to joinup as i am about to buy a new barebones mini pc,msi cubi 5 12m i5,it will be fitted with 16gb ram,and a 512 ssd m2,as i am sick to death of ms windows.i have already downloaded a copy of linux mint wilma to a usb stick, and installed it on a hp cq58 laptop, all went well with the instalation, however i am having problems with sound issues,so as the laptop is a 2012 model,i am going to upgrade to a newer pc,and i suspect from what i have seen and read mint should pare well with my intended purchase, however i would like sage advise from you good people.many thanks in advance
Hi, welcome!
So what sort of sound issues are you having? Most sound chips seem to be supported these days … and failing that there’s HDMI, bluetooth, USB etc … so whatever the machine you should be able to get sound from it somehow …
hi madpenguin,as to the sound issue, its defo my fault as i deleted realtec family pcie controller, also i had before my stupidity of deletion a problem with pcie,it kept stating that the pcie could not find enough resources?that was with win 8.1,and with a win 10 home upgrade so i gave up and wiped the hard drive, and installed linux mint,so probably nothing to do with my install of linux? hence my decision to buy another pc as the laptop in question is a little ancient.
Well, there are no end of barebones pcs out there, personally Ive switched to raspberry pi’s, works for everything i do bar video editing … Which is a little too much for it … all i’d say is make sure you have 8gb ram as a min, and an ssd rather than spinning rust
thanks mad penguin for the reply to the new cubi 5,the other question you asked me about was why i had no sound with linux mint new install,i had not turned on the said pc with linux mint for a few weeks as i had almost given up with the old pc because of the no sound problem, but today i turned on the old pc,and there were quite a few updates available to download so i did, after download i restarted the said pc,and the sound is now working ok,so panic over, and yes i will buy the new cubi 5 12m,add more than 16 gb of ram along with a new ssd m2,but its good to know now that the old laptop is now fully opperational,so thanks once again for a speedy response.
Would be interested to know what the power draw is when you get it …
