Sorry I took a while to get back to you but I found the problem once again my own fault
When I first set up this PC the headphone socket didn’t work in fact if I plugged headphones in it crashed the PC but I didn’t bother about it at that time because the desktop speakers were working ok and it was just an experimental PC I set up for my Grand-Daughter also the speakers had a headphone socket she could use for headphones if she wanted , but while I had the case open I had a look to see what I had done wrong and I noticed i plugged the the front loader cable into the wrong socket on the motherboard, so I plugged it into the right socket and rebooted and the desktop speakers and headphones work fine, the only problem now is that when i do plug in the headphones it doesn’t kill the desktop speakers automatically which isn’t a big problem because I could switch the speakers off manually
Well you did help, you may not have got to the root of the problem on this occasion but no doubt you would have given time, besides I think it’s only polite to thank someone for trying to help whether they solve the problem or not so the “thank you” was not so much for solving my problem but for trying to help me
