I’m off for a ciggy … back in 5 … if you get to ANYTHING you’re unsure of STOP and wait till I get back

At some point it’ll ask you “where you are” … just click on England on the map … it’ll probably say “london” at he bootom, that’s fine leave it as london.

It will also prompt you for Keyboard settings … select English (UK) in both columns

then you’ll be prompted for your user account details -

When you get to the part where it ask you for a username and password etc … here’s a few hints -

You will be asked for things like -

Name:
Computername:
Username:
Password:
Re-Enter Password:

The Computername field will probably be autofilled for you after you’ve entered your name … but you can change it.

Make sure the Username is all lower case, and no spaces

Here’s what I used for MY PC

Name: Mark Greaves Computername: mark-AA1 Username: mark Password: whatever_you_want Re-Enter Password: whatever_you_want (again)

so keep the username short and lower case (and no spaces)

Password rules … I think it needs to be at least 6 digits and at least one number … and remember, passwords ARE case sensitive.

It may be a good idea to write down what you enter here, so you don’t forget them … you WILL need at least the Username and Password later on, so don’t forget them.

When asked if you want to enable “Auto Login” (Login Automatically) … tick that option if you DON’T want to have to enter your username and password at each boot.

If offered DO NOT tick “encrypt filesystem” or anything with the word “encrypt” … encryption can cause issues later.

Ok, thanks for all that! Peppermint is loading! ;D

Erm . you didn’t have your external HDD attached did you ?

Nope- didn’t use that at all.I don’t use that very often- just files I might want to peruse- it’s sort of a library.

It now says installation complete continue testing or restart now

OK, click “Restart Now”

But during the reboot it should eject the disk … but sometimes it doesnt

When it reboots, if you get to the screen with “Try Peppermint” it obviously didn’t eject the CD … you need to manually eject it and power off and on again … so it boots without the CD inserted.

Ok rebooting…will let you know what it does

It ejected the CD went to the Peppermint three desktop. It is on! Question- doesn’t seem to have Libre office tho.

Peppermint is intended to be a “Cloud” distro, so doesn’t come with much installed locally … we’ll install LibreOffice (and anything else you want) later after get the wireless working

Cloud = Uses online apps such as Google Docs, etc

Don’t panic though … it can have ANYTHING installed locally as well.

Think of it as a “minimal” install … ie. the OS doesn’t come with pre-installed apps … you install ONLY the ones YOU want, rather than someone elses choice.

OK, ready to do the wireless … or do you want to leave that till tomorrow ?
