Over riding an XP password?

See the edit above

I did, but I can’t be sure I didn’t cancel it come to think of it as this one is taking a lot longer and I didn’t get a chance to tick x4 and verify last time. So far this one is going to plan…

It has just played a jaunty tune and said operation successfully completed!

Did the tray cycle ?

If you mean open no, but it has completed it and the whirring has stopped and it says disc is written.

OK, leave the CD in the drive (with the tray closed) and reboot the PC.

Does it boot into Windows, or does it boot to a Peppermint screen with options like

Try Peppermint
Install Peppermint
etc.
etc.

If so, DO NOT at this point select “Install Peppermint” … instead select “Try Peppermint” and hit the Enter key.

If instead it boots directly int XP, let me know.

Ok…brb

OMG!!! It went to Peppermint! So did as you said Mark “try Peppermint.”

EDIT: There is now a white and red Peppermint desktop with install Peppermint in the top left hand corner of the screen!

Am I turning into a Linux geek cos I’m excited!!

Let me know if it boots all the way to a desktop

with an ugly wallpaper, but we can change that later

It’s prettier than XP and I have plenty of nice wallpapers… :stuck_out_tongue:

OK, now to find out if you have a wireless card

Hit Ctrl+Alt+T … a terminal should open

run:

sudo lshw -C network

and tell me if only one or two network cards are listed

[EDIT]

If there’s 2 you’ll get something like this:-

*-network description: Ethernet interface product: RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller vendor: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:02:00.0 logical name: eth0 version: 02 serial: 00:1e:68:d5:92:04 size: 10Mbit/s capacity: 100Mbit/s width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress msix vpd bus_master cap_list rom ethernet physical tp mii 10bt 10bt-fd 100bt 100bt-fd autonegotiation configuration: autonegotiation=on broadcast=yes driver=r8169 driverversion=2.3LK-NAPI duplex=half latency=0 link=no multicast=yes port=MII speed=10Mbit/s resources: irq:44 ioport:3000(size=256) memory:71010000-71010fff memory:71000000-7100ffff memory:71020000-7103ffff *-network description: Wireless interface product: AR242x / AR542x Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) vendor: Atheros Communications Inc. physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0 logical name: wlan0 version: 01 serial: 00:23:4d:3d:36:01 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress msix bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless configuration: broadcast=yes driver=ath5k driverversion=3.8.0-27-generic firmware=N/A ip=172.16.0.5 latency=0 link=yes multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bg resources: irq:18 memory:75200000-7520ffff

It says command not found and I typed it exactly as you showed.

What did you type ?

Don’t copy paste … type it again please

I typed it again and now it works. It says network disabled description wireless interface capabilities ethernet physical wireless amongst other things I don’t understand!

Yes but how many sections are ther

How many times does a line start with

product:

?

Can’t see anything with product. It starts:

OK you have a wireless card BUT it’s a broadcom B43xx adapter, so we’ll probably either need to get hold of an ethernet cable from somewhere, or download the firmware on another PC and transfer it across.

Either way, do you want to continue and get rid of Windows tonight or not ?

Could it be downloaded onto my portable hardrive plugged into this netbook and then transferred over?

I’d love to please! If you don’t mind?

of course … or the USB stick.

OK, click the “Install Peppermint” icon on the desktop … and tell me what you see.

Don’t get ahead of me, because there are certain sections of the installer that need to be done properly.

Great to all…clicking the Peppermint icon now…
