I downloaded Owncloud 7 from the developers website to try it out but it looked a bit involved so I would be happy to remove it completely what would be the best way to do that ?
How did those PPA's get there in the first place ? .. openshot.developers and handbrake-release don't contain any packages for "trusty" ;)
(you may as well delete them)
I added them because handbrake doesn’t seem to be available in the repos and I added the openshot PPA because it’s under active development and I thought by adding the PPA I’d keep up to date with the latest versions, (Is my thinking flawed here ?)
Well neither of those PPA’s contain anything for “trusty”, so they’re erroring out … remove them (or disable them) in
Synaptic > Settings > Repositories > Other Software (tab)
As for the opensuse repo … comment it out by placing a # at the beginning of the line (or remove the line altogether) in:
I couldn’t find a reference to the opensource repo anywhere in /etc/apt/sources.list but was showing in Synaptic > Settings > Repositories > Other Software (tab) so I unchecked it, running an update now show a lot of duplicate sources, Do I just remove the duplicates from the sources list ?

Ok I followed you instructions and that’s put a stop to the updates error (no more duplicates) after that I ran the Software Updater manually and worked perfectly (no more strange behaviour as per the video I posted) So I suppose I’ll just have to wait to see if I get offered any further updates automatically
I definitely like the simplicity of your sources list, I take it when you use that site/utility you select the sources you want and it will generate a sources.list text file that you replace with the original ?
Or I suppose you could just copy mine, which is the same as yours anyway just laid out better … or not bother now it’s working, in the best “why mess” tradition
