Peppermint OS 3 fixed

Thanks Mark,
I intend keeping Peppermint 3 for the full cycle.
I don’t need any of these alterations so I will use Plan A, i.e. I will ‘Try’ and then ‘Install’ later in the day when I can get out of the garden shed. :-X

Thanks Mark! I’ve got it looking good again!

One more question…how do I remove that annoying notification letter looking icon? (I’m ok with notifications, I just hate that icon. But if I have to remove notifications to remove the icon I’m ok with that).

OK … found it … I’ve been looking to get rid of this too (without loosing on screen notifications, and without it also removing blueman)

Run these commands in this order:

sudo apt-get install notify-osd notify-osd-icons

then

sudo apt-get remove notification-daemon

Now log off/on … or reboot.

If you also have no need for Bluetooth … you can also remove the blueman package (Bluetooth Manager) with:

sudo apt-get remove blueman

Thanks! That did it

One other question…I’ve been trying to get suspend to ram to work…but can’t for the life of me. (I’ve googled alot and apparently it’s an Ubuntu 12.04 bug)…have you heard of any fix for it?

Thanks!

Is this on an Acer Aspire One ?

No it’s not…it’s on a lenovo S10-3…but alot of different laptop models have the problem

Also another question…do you know of any way to change the font color in lightdm?

Thanks!

OK, you’ve lost me … where exactly do you want to change the font colour ?

And can you describe what happens if you choose “Suspend” as the default action for (both “On Battery” and “On AC”) when you close the lid in the:

xfce4-power-manager-settings

Applet

Hi Mark,
I booted from the pendrive and selected ‘Try Peppermint’
It loaded to Peppermint three startup screen.
I selected ‘Install Peppermint’, that’s when things got a bit flaky.
After a long pause, the message came up
" Either Chrome ran out of memory or the process for the webpage was terminated for some other reason."
“To continue, Reload or go to another page”
The next message was “Its dead Jim”
When I cleared that screen it showed the install page that had been hidden and the installation continued until the page cleared and there were various messages put up like
“Stopping System V runlevel”
“Panic occured, switching back to text console”
It then hung there for 10 minutes with the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock lights flashing.
Nothing I did from the “How to reboot cleanly even when the keyboard/mouse are frozen” list helped, so I did a hard reset from the front computer panel.
I did the procedure again and selected “Try Peppermint” and logged in here.
Can you help again ?

Don W

OK, the:-

" Either Chrome ran out of memory or the process for the webpage was terminated for some other reason."
and
“Its dead Jim”

Are messages from the Chromium web browser, saying the system has run out of memory … web browsers can use quite a lot of memory, as can the installation routine … and the standard AA1 has limited RAM.

Try again, but boot to the LveUSB, then run the installer without opening the chromium web browser.

If you still run out of memory … boot to the LiveUSB and instead of selecting “Try Peppermint”, select “Install Peppermint”.

I’m sorry, I realized that didn’t make much since (I’m pretty sure it was late ;))

I installed unity-greeter for lightdm, and changed the background color and removed those annoying dots (as well as the ubuntu branding).

Now the problem is, the font up in the top bar is really dark. I’ve googled around a decent amount, but I couldn’t find anything on changing it.

Also what happens is it suspends…the lights on the front show that it’s suspended…but when I reopen the lid, the screen doesn’t turn back on. It stays black without even the lighter colored black that it shows when it’s on.

Thanks Mark,
That advice to install from the pendrive seems to have worked.
I’m off for some tea now and will see about installing further updates later.
I will start at Stage 5 'Enabling extra software repositories.

Don W
I’m back with more trouble.
Stage 7 ‘Run a System Update’ went ok.
Stage 8 Installing extra software went ok
Stage 9 failed at the point of installing the fonts as you suggested.
I minimised the windows and there was no sign of the license box.
I used Ctrl+Alt+Delete to reboot.

See this posting … or at least the second half of it.

A) I’m not sure I can help with the font colour … it may be sset by the default gtk theme, but I have no idea how you would change that in LXDE.

I suppose you could look into another greeter, such as the Elementary OS pantheon-greeter … which has a nice digital clock on it too, but isn’t quite finished yet … I couldn’t get it to display my background image (apparently a known bug that’s being worked on) … tiz nice though, even with a black background

Click on the second image at this link, to see how it should look, if you can get the background image to work -

B) Is the PC resuming from suspend, but just without the backlight coming on ? … you can test this by shining a torch at the LCD monitor and checking if there’s a picture there, but it’s not light by the backlight.

[EDIT]

See here:

It appears this is a problem in the with how the HPET (high precision event timer) handles event triggers in some deep CPU c-states on your hardware.

According to the lower postings there, it’s supposed to be fixed in kernel 3.5 … so maybe you’d like to try the 3.5 kernel from Ubuntu 12.10 … or the patched 3.2 kernel linked from that bug report … or the nohpet kernel boot parameter.

Hi Mark,
I went to sort out the fonts installer problem as you suggested and it seems to be ok ?
I don’t really know what is going on here as the problems keep turning up.
I didn’t have as many problems with OS2 and I am wondering if it is worth the trouble to carry on with this.
If I was to sign up for dropbox would it be easier to download the Epson SX130 all-in-one drivers.?
I see there is a dropbox option under menu>Internet.
The latest problem is a broken dependency. In Synaptic package manager it says iscan-data is broke and not installed

If I was to sign up for dropbox would it be easier to download the Epson SX130 all-in-one drivers.?

NOPE … that has nothing to do with DOWNLOADING from other peoples dropbox.

The latest problem is a broken dependency. In Synaptic package manager it says iscan-data is broke and not installed

Are you installing them in the correct order ? … what happens if you try installing iscan-data BEFORE whatever is giving that message ?

Hi Mark,
I was in Software Manager when it hung. I am not having any great success with this install.
I wonder if it would be easier with the Ubuntu 10.04 I have on disc ? I also have the book.

take care
Don W

10.04 is also nearing end-of life.

The problems you’re describing are just the order you are installing the printer drivers.

you haven’t IMHO had any problems so far that are beyond configuration … so I’d stick with Peppermint … but your call.

I was in Software Manager when it hung

Can you explain that … what hang ? … what were you doing in Software Manager ?

Where are you getting the drivers for your printer from ? … if they were for Peppermint 2 or Ubuntu, they may not be compatible with Peppermint 3/Ubuntu 12.04 … it may be that newer versions are required.

Hi Mark,
I have been at this machine for over 5 hours now and my patience is wearing very thin.
Thank you for helping me out but there are quite a few problems I haven’t yet resolved.
Any time I type a command the computer takes a while to respond.
When I am in a game it can take 10 secs to respond after a couple of minutes playing, all is well and the game flows smoothly.
Its the same at startup, it takes a while for the screen to appear.

With the scanner, I have downloaded from your dropbox and when I double clicked on the 1st package (iscan-data) it installed and said there was a missing file. I no longer get any response from this package when I double click it.
When I start XSane it says "Failed to open device ‘epkowa:usb:003:003’
“Access to source has been denied”

take care

OK, if I were to decide not to continue with Peppermint 3 … my first choice would be to go back to Peppermint 2 and just live with the fact that updates will stop in October … it will be fine for quite some time yet … but that’s just me.

As far as the printer goes … as I said, the files in my dropbox may not be the correct versions for Peppermint 3/Ubuntu 12.04 … I can always sort out the correct ones, but it’s pointless if you’re going to change to another distro/version.

Let me know what your plans are, and we’ll go from there.

The only thing I can offer is that BOTH my AA1’s have more than the default 512MB RAM … but I doubt if that’s the problem, as Peppermint 3 is only VERY slightly heavier on system resources than Peppermint 2

It would however be nice to hear from anyone else that has tried Peppermint 3 on an AA1 that only has the default 512MB RAM, and if they’ve noticed any problems.
