Asus Zenbook UX301. Peppermint 8. USB connection to HP Photosmart C4280. Cannot print. Message “Device communication error” Can you please help
Osmond
Try deleting the printer in “Printers”.
Then installing hplip-gui
sudo apt-get install hplip-gui
then look for “HPLIP Toolbox” in your menu, and add your printer using that.
Should have said Peppermint 9.
Cannot delete Printer.
In Terminal cannot insert password
Go to
Menu > Settings > Printers
right-click on your printer … select “Delete”
When entering your password into the terminal nothing will be echoed to screen (not even ******), but your password IS going in, so just type your password then hit enter.
Right clicking has no effect. However, HPLIP Status Service–HP Device Manager–Configure–Select printer/FAX queues to Remove offers a Remove button bottom right. Does this remove the printer?
Incidentally my version of HPLIP is 3-17 -10 which is not the latest.
Osmond
In “System Settings/Printers”: if right clicking does not provide a menu (strange), then highlight the printer (left click on it) then click “Printer/Delete”
OR
In HP-Device-Manager; highlight the printer in the left-hand column then click the red button at the top (next to the green button) to remove the printer. Works in version 3.16.3
Printer has been removed and re-installed. Cannot print Test Page.
Are you sure this printer is working, because the HP Photosmart C4280 is supposed to be fully supported by hplip ?
Yes, printer working perfectly using another laptop. On the peppermint one I keep getting "Device communication error (5012)
Have you set it up as a network printer ?

Test page started but stopped halfway. After5 mins printed “Confidential” then some information about the printer. Then several minutes later another page “HPLP Printer Test Page” but nothing else. Tried a document. Nothing happened for some time then several sheets covered in black ink. Had to switch off the printer.

Tried printing Test Page. Got"Confidential" together with Information about the printer. After a minute “HPLIP Printer Test Page” partially printed but printer stopped with on/off light flashing.
I have selected “Peppermint Settings-Hardware-Printer-Server-Connect-Help-Troubleshoot-Choose printer-Print Test Page” which it does. Have also printed a personal file.
Next job is to see whether I can print from internet and e-mail.
