Remotely connecting to a Windows PC/Laptop.

I have a question… My Ubuntu box won’t connect to servers… Just times out after I changed the IP to static.

check the settings again… if they are correct, try a reboot.

are you SURE you rebooted every device that connects to your router ?

Right, rebooting again. It’s only the Ubuntu box & Win7 box that’s connect atm.

Rebooted the Ubuntu box, doesn’t seem to have made any difference, settings are correct but it keeps timing out to any domain I try.

what do you mean… is the wireless connected ?

What happens if you put
192.168.0.1
or
209.85.169.147
into the firefox address bar and hit enter ?

Wireless is connected, and it’ll connect to the routers GUI, i just won’t connect to sites. Not even this forum.

What happens if you put
209.85.169.147
into firefox ?

does the Google page get displayed ?

BTW, you don’t have to keep rebooting every time you change anything… just click the networkmanager icon, disable the wireless, then re-enable it.

Yeah the google page displays fine.

First see the bit above about NOT having to reboot each change.

OK, are you SURE you set the
DNS servers: 192.168.0.1

if so, try this instead
DNS servers: 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220

be aware that’s a comma after the second 222

I’m positive about setting the DNS servers as “192.168.0.1”… Second option worked fine though. Everything is good on the Ubuntu box now.

OK, 2 things… those are the openDNS DNS servers you’re now using… if you want to use the Virgin ones, you’ll have to look through your router interface… they will be listed in there somewhere.

But the openDNS ones are fine

Secondly, I’ve edited the Win7 settings in this posting:
http://linuxforums.org.uk/general-help-advice/remotely-connecting-to-a-windows-pclaptop/msg68227/#msg68227

to include the openDNS server addresses… so reload that posting.

Obviously you could use the Virgin DNS servers instead if you prefer.

Your router obviously doesn’t like being used as a DNS server :o

I’ll change them at a later date, for now they’ll do fine I guess. I’ve changed the wireless on the Win7 box, I just can’t seem to find the wired connection to change that.

gimme a sec to boot a win7 PC

The wife’s one eh? :stuck_out_tongue:

You guessed it ::slight_smile:

First make sure the wireless is working. (as in switched on  )

OK, right-click the little wireless icon by the clock, and select Open Network and Sharing Centre … then click on the Change adapter settings link on the left … then right-click the Wireless connetcion, and select Properties … now highlight the Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP/IPv4) item, and click the Properties button.

Oops, sorry … you said WIRED … no matter, it should be in the same place…

eg.
Open Network and Sharing Centre → Change adapter settings link → wired connection

Right, that’s that done. I guess I’m good to go now?

Yup… you just need to follow the earlier stuff about remote desktop now.

You’re going to want to remember his static IP though.

I’m off to bed though, so have a read up, and I’ll be back tomorrow … as always

Yup, cheers for the help! I’m off to bed myself, so I’ll have a read up on the earlier stuff later on.

Right, I’ve decided to go down the TightVNC route, just because TightVNC is in the repos and I’d rather use something “native”. I’ve installed the server version on the win7 box, and I also installed

tightvnc-java
  • version 1.2.7-8
tightvncserver

version 1.3.9-6.1

xtightvncviewer

version 1.3.9-6.1

I wasn’t sure which ones I had to install from the repos, so I installed those. There was other VNC packages,

vnc-java
ssvnc
x11vnc

Should I install those as well? I tried looking for tightnvc from the application lens. search for TightVNC and didn’t find it. Also tried things like “vnc”, “tight” etc.

Personally I’d have tried RDP first, but whatever floats your boat

just install the gtkvncviewer package:

sudo apt-get install gtkvncviewer

Then when you fire it up… (as long as the VNC server is running on your bothers PC) enter your brothers IP and the port you set sepeaated by a colon (

as in -
Server (:port): 192.168.0.4:5900
Name: whatever you set up
Password: whatever you set up
