Remotely connecting to a Windows PC/Laptop.

Where it says “Name:” I had no option, for “name”, so what would I put in?

OK, let’s keep it all in the family

Download the TightVNC java viewer… open a terminal and enter:

cd ~

then:

wget http://www.tightvnc.com/download/2.0.95/tvnjviewer-2.0.95-bin.zip

Unzip the archive:

unzip tvnjviewer-2.0.95-bin.zip

now let’s hide the tightvnc-jviewer.jar file so it doesn’t mess up your home folder:

mv ~/tightvnc-jviewer.jar ~/.tightvnc-jviewer.jar

OK, you can now run it from the terminal with:

java -jar .tightvnc-jviewer.jar

Or create a launcher with these settings:-
Name: TightVNC Viewer
Command: java -jar /home/bally/.tightvnc-jviewer.jar
Comment:

Just tried to connect. I just keep timing out.

I still keep timing out, anyway I could fix this?

I’ll get round to testing the setup as soon as I can (bit swamped ATM) … but can only do this when I have access to a Win7 box (Mrs Lappie) so I’m afraid you’re dependent (for the time being) on how often she’s on Facebook

[EDIT]

You’re in luck, she went out for a bit…

OK, I installed TightVNC Server 2.0.4 onto the Win7 box … by accepting all the default settings (except I chose not to install the viewer as well) … gave it login and admin passwords (during the installation) … and allowed it to create its own Windows firewall exception.

Then I fired up the TightVNC java viewer, and entered:

Server: 172.16.0.5 (which is the static IP of the Mrs laptop) Port: 5900 (which is the default)
Clicked Connect, and voila... her desktop appeared.

As it’s on the internal network, there’s no need for port forwarding.

I also tested it with gtkvncviewer, with these settings -

Server (:port): 172.16.0.5:5900 User name: Password: ******** (obviously you need to give the password you set up here)
Clicked Connect, and voila... her desktop appeared.

So there’s obviously something wrong with the way you set it up :o

Or there’s some third party firewall software on his system that’s blocking the connection.

FYI, all that’s on the Mrs laptop is Avira (free) and Malwarebytes.

Hmm… I’ll uninstall it and try again. Could you give me a direct download link you used for the TightVNC server, I downloaded it from the actual site, not sure if it was upto date or not though, and you used the java viewer from the repos in Ubuntu correct? or am I missing something here.

Direct link to TightVNC Server (but probably where you got it anyway):
http://www.tightvnc.com/download/2.0.4/tightvnc-2.0.4-setup.exe

No, the TightVNC java viewer we installed on your box.

also tested it with the gtkvncviewer (from repos)

Worked with both

Right I’ll give it a spin once I manage to get a hold of his Laptop, like your mrs, he’s always on Facebook. >.>

Right, I now know for sure that this isn’t me. I’m perfectly capable of installing software and configuring on windows, but this just takes the biscuit. Three times I’ve tried and they all time-out.

Here’s what I do.

On the win7 box:

Install server version only, setup passwords, let it make it’s own exception in the windows firewall and start it up and that’s that.

On the ubuntu box:

I type in terminal -

java -jar .tightvnc-jviewer.jar

to use the VNC java viewer. I put my brothers static IP which we set up - (192.168.0.3) and port number 5900.
nothing happens and then it times out.

I also get this from Terminal:

bally@bally-laptop:~$ java -jar .tightvnc-jviewer.jar 07-Oct-2011 23:40:11 com.glavsoft.viewer.Viewer INFO: TightVNC Viewer 07-Oct-2011 23:40:16 com.glavsoft.viewer.Viewer connectToHost INFO: Connecting to host 192.168.0.3:5900 07-Oct-2011 23:40:16 com.glavsoft.viewer.Viewer connectToHost INFO: false

It’s got to be a firewall issue with my router/modem. There isn’t any third party AV/Firewall installed on his laptop, it’s clean because he’s limited to facebook only.

Could be a firewall issue on your Ubuntu box… are you running one?

have you tried turning off ICS and checked if that makes a difference ?

are you 100% sure his IP is 192.168.0.3

can you ping 192.168.0.3 ?

ping -c 5 192.168.0.3

I think I may have changed some weird new Win7 network settings on the Mrs laptop ages ago… I’ll look for them later… meanwhile, see if you get any response from that ping and let us know.

Not that I know off. My router/modem has a built in firewall which is good enough. I’m pretty sure that’s his IP.

DHCP Enabled: No IPv4 Address: 192.168.0.3 IPv4 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 IPv4 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 IPv4 DNS Servers: 194.168.4.100 194.168.8.100

The ping doesn’t return anything, I remember we had this issue last time when we tried to connect my Ubuntu box with the Win7 for file sharing.

I doubt if it is the routers firewall… that’s usually more for separating the LAN from the web.

i think it may be something to do with some settings I had to change in the Mrs Win7 network configuration before it would connect to anything other than another Win7 box… but I can’t remember what or where they are off the top of my head.

Leave it with me, I’ll look later, after her nightly Facebook session

Ok doke !

Before I run off searching my Mrs laptop for obscure Win7 settings…

Are you 100% sure you are trying to connect to the correct IP address ?

If you remember, I said to set up 2 IP’s on your brothers box:
http://linuxforums.org.uk/general-help-advice/remotely-connecting-to-a-windows-pclaptop/msg68227/#msg68227

One for wireless and one for wired… are you SURE you’re connecting to the right one ?

I’m 100% positive. I set 0.3 for the wireless & 0.4 for the wired.

Just doubled check there just now, I am most definitely connecting to the right local IP.

I’ll get round to this as soon as I’ve access to a the Win7 laptop… which may be a few days.

To tell the truth, I’m in no great hurry to delve into the Win7 “Network Sharing Centre” again, but will take some screenshots of the laptop settings when I can.

There’s nothing stopping you from looking what’s in there yourself though… it was definitely a couple of things in there I changed, just can’t remember what ???

I had a look around earlier on through the “services” processes and through some firewall program… saw nothing that would stop it connecting, most “remote” connections like, remote desktop, remote services, etc are allowed. I also found that there was a mcafee personal firewall running, disabled that. There wasn’t any changes though. I just keep timing out. I’ll try look through the settings when I get a hold of his laptop again tomorrow. I’m in no rush so, I’ll just do some research here and there.

EDIT: Infact I’ve just noticed something. The guide says to enable remote connectivity via the remote menu and selecting "Allow connections from computers running any version of remote desktop.

http://www.hackourlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/System-Properties1.jpg

However, I don’t get that menu when I goto remote. I only get the top half. o.O So to me, that must mean I need to get some cmd commands to change this? Because it looks as if this is only available for Pro & Ultimate users.

Don’t worry too much about the VNC application just yet… test it with ping instead:

ping -c 5 192.168.0.3

If it won’t respond to ping, it’s unlikely to reply to VNC.

Point is… my Mrs laptop responds to a ping, so you need to get your brother to as well.

What I changed was DEFINITELY a couple of settings in the Windows 7 “Network Sharing Centre”.

Problem is, I can’t write them down as I can’t remember the defaults so have no idea what I changed, so the easiest way is going to be to take screenshots of all the laptops settings as they are now… then you can tell me what’s different.

Right gimme 5 minutes, I’ll hop downstairs and grab his lappy. Should be interesting…
