Well the thing I find odd is that even using another wireless adapter, it starts off quick, then progressively slows down.
So I’m wondering if the superhub is just rubbish at handling multiple wireless connections.
I’m wondering if we should try using your old router as the wireless access point, and connecting that to the superhub by an ethernet cable … thereby only giving the superhub a single (non wireless) connection to worry about.
You game for experimenting ?
Are you in a built up area … I mean are there a lot of other overlapping wireless access points all using the same channel ?
I might have another option which is a while back I bought a Virgin Wireless modem/router (not a superhub) at a boot sale, I’ve never tried it but it’s there as an option if you want, but I’ll go with whatever you think best, prior to getting the Superhub I was using an old Motorola Surfboard modem + my own wireless router which actually worked fine but I can’t go back to that now because they took away the Surfboard Modem

I live in a city but not in a particularly built up area, about 5 or 6 networks show up under “available networks” which are just my immediate neighbours. but I don’t know what channel they’re using
I’m still at work at the moment but I’ll send the output from iwlist when I get home
this may just turn out to be interference from the other networks, or maybe not, but worth a shot as it’s an easy solution if it works and an easy test.
Nearly all ISP’s standard kit comes pre-configured to use channel 6 or 11 … so this can happen.
(personally I always scan the available networks, then pick a channel as far away from what everyone else is using as possible)
Hi guys sorry I’ve taken so long to respond i’ve been working late and we have our Grand-Daughter so I haven’t had a minute, it’s been a long day and I’m now just chillin with a few beers,so hopefully we’ll get started tomorrow if that’s ok ?
a) is there an option in your superhub to switch from “tkip” to “aes” encryption … or even to drop encryption altogether and switch from WPA2 to WEP ? (even just to test)
and
b) there appear to be 2 networks in range … remember when you had the issue changing the routers IP and we had to juggle IP addresses because of hidden networks … I’m wondering if Virgin are doing similar to the BThomehubs, where they actually have 2 (or more) networks, your private one and a public “hotspot” one … is there an option to disable this in the superhub.
the dual networks on BThomehubs made a lot of machines drop connections … now whilst I’m not saying this is the problem here … it’s worth investigating.
c) in some cases the signal strength on the “emegra” network appears to be weaker than the “virginmedia5139198” network … are you miles away from the router (or have thick brick walls in between) ?
What i’m saying is, if you move the PC that gets a good connection to the same palce as the ones that don’t, does it suffer too ?

OK I had a look but I can't find anything relating to tkip or aes encryption, WEP is listed in the security settings but it's greyed out and i cant access it

Yes i remenber but you also asked me later on if I had another network adaptor to try.and as it turned out I had a spare USB adaptor which I plugged in which might explain 2 networks

The router and NAS are in my attic , however the PC’s are located on the upper level of the house, making them no more than 10 feet from the router as the crow flies

NO … that would explain the 2 wireless adapters (wlan0 and wlan1) butt there are ALSO 2 distinct wireless access points.
I suppose one could be a neighbours … but it’s giving a stronger signal then the “emegra” network, and is called “virginmedia5139198”
Have you still got the old router plugged in somewhere too ?
What’s the name of the access point you’re currently connected to … emegra ?
[EDIT]
Is there a setting to turn off the “guest network” ?
if you go to advanced settings>wireless>wireless and set the wireless mode to 54Mbps … is WEP ungreyed now ?
So I guess that virginmediaxxx xxxx network MUST be a second network on your superhub.
Well if there is i can’t connect to it using either my own network key or the default key I was given from Virgin
OK .. is there a setting in your superhub called something like "modem Mode" ?
Yes it’s there
You'll obviously need a spare ethernet cable too .. have you got one ?
Yes I still have my old router and ethernet cable
it seems from your links that I’m not the only one having problems with the Superhub but it’s a bad business if we have to do this to get a decent internet connection as the only advantage of the Superhub compared to what I had (seperate modem/router) is it takes away an extra power adaptor and ethernet cable, but if nothing else it will be interesting to see if it works.
Just to update last night I changed the wireless mode in the router wireless settings to “Up to 300Mbps (best for wireless performance)” and I ran speedchecks with broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk early this morning and there is a huge speed increase with Linux 2 & 3
I couldn’t run the speedtest on Linux4 as it’s now running too slow to even open the page let alone run the test
these figures are much better than I was getting before (although there’s still a vast difference between the two), I’m not 100% sure if the speed increase is due to the changes I made to the wireless mode or because it was early morning I ran the test when there would have been little wireless traffic in my immediate area
further to the problems with Linux4 we now have a red circle with a white strip in the taskbar, clicking on it shows the following serious error
“E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/gb.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_raring-updates_main_i18n_Translation-en, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.”
I’ve no idea what this means or if i’ts connected with this PC’s network problems but it seems to be disintegrating by the minute
if not, has the warning gone in the system tray … if not, try running menu>System Tools>Software Updater and see if it disappears once that’s updated itself.
