I have just tried using a second monitor, which has been connected for almost a year.
I last used it less than a week ago.
My main PC is in our bedroom and the ‘other’ monitor is the TV in the living room.
when I go into ‘settings’ / ‘display & monitor’ I see both monitors but the secondary one is ‘greyed out’
What I think is strange is that when I reboot, the second monitor springs into life, showing the ‘kubuntu’ name
Then on boot-up, nothing.
I’ve checked the connections and there’s nothing wrong with them, otherwise there would be no ‘screen’ in the settings display.
Which graphics card and drivers ?

My main PC is in our bedroom and the 'other' monitor is the TV in the living room.
Can you explain that ? … so they’re somehow connected at the same time ?
How is the TV connected ? … HDMI ? … how long is the cable ?

My Desktop Kubuntu 14.04 is in our bedroom and we have a Samsung 51" TV on the front room wall connected by a 10m HDMI cable which had been connected for over a year with no problems then one day it fails to work but on the settings screen, there is a representation of the TV but its greyed out, So, my PC can se it but for some reason is not displaying to it, yet when I reboot, I get the ‘Kubuntu’ logo displayed then it goes off!!!

HDMI-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
It’s there but not sending anything to it!
Only on shut-down/reboot.
The cable is 10m and going up into the attic then across to the bedroom then into the bedroom.
I will be testing it with my laptop, I will be connecting the HDMI to the laptop from the bedroom end to see if it’s a problem with the cable ot the desktop PC.
It’s sorted!
I connected my laptop to the TV via the HDMI cable which was connected to the desktop PC in the bedroom and it worked, there was a signal going through to the TV, so the problem was not the HDMI cable.
I then connected it all back up to the desktop PC in the bedroom and had another look at the monitor settings.
something made me click in te tick box of the TV in the front room and it activated (it was already ‘ticked’) which was the strange thing.
everything is now working.
