SOLVED Side panel on Nautilus

I have been using Ubuntu for two years now for myself, but we have just built a new machine to take to a friend in France.

On my machine there is the panel down the left side listing the various locations; Home, Network etc., but on the new machine this is missing. I cannot find anywhere in the settings to make it appear so I would much appreciate a push in the right direction.

Thank you.

Does it not appear if you shove your mouse pointer against the left hand side of the screen ?

You might want to look at this:

if you have an optimus setup.

or try running:

dconf reset -f /org/compiz/

what’s the output from:

sudo lshw -C display

Or try installing My Unity. I can’t remember who advised me to try it. I think it was Emegra. Sorry can’t check if it is in software as I am using PM4 now…gave up on Ubuntu. I seem to remember that it gave you control on what the sidebar did.

Thank you for your replies and I am sorry for the delay.

These are the replies:

doug@Win8Ubuntu:~$ dconf reset -f /org/compiz/
The program ‘dconf’ can be found in the following packages:

  • dconf
  • dconf-tools
    Try: sudo apt-get install
    doug@Win8Ubuntu:~$ sudo lshw -C display
    [sudo] password for doug:

I am about to look at My Unity

Bother, can’t see an edit button.

Nudging the left edge does not bring up the list.

To edit a post … use the “Modify” button

Let us know if My Unity helps.

Well that works, I thank you. As I write this I am listening to Albinoni on Rhythmbox so that works too. We are taking this computer to France tomorrow.

I must say that Linux is an absolute doddle compared to Windows 8 unless you want to natter on Facebook or play games.

What’s the problem with Facebook ? … that should work.

I’m guessing he means Facebook chat - does it not work with Ubuntu’s Firefox? I don’t use FB chat myself…

No, what I mean is that Windows, as it appears to me, is only good for Facebook, Twitter, etc., etc. and all other froth.

Ahh … now that makes sense
