I have never been able to get that to work- I click on it, and then ok to spell check, and it says complete but does not correct any typos/errors.
Also, when I open a document now it goes to recovery first instead of opening it. Maybe it is this old laptop I put Peppermint on- not used netbook for a few days as this has a big screen and I am doing an online course, so doing loads of reading and typing.

Have you got the English_british language package installed? Also have you got a dictionary installed?
If not then go to Software Manager and do a search for Hunspell.
Install the one for the right language you want and spellcheck in Libre Office should now work.
Ok uploaded Hunspell and a Brit dictionary and set my language is set in UK English in the language toolbar but still it does not check the spelling- it says it is correct when I choose to check the spelling and grammar when it is not.
In LibreOffice Writer go to:
Tools->Options->Language Settings->Writing Aids
Available language modules (put check against Hunspell Spellchecker)
User-defined Dictionaries (put check against en-GB[English(UK)])
Options (put check against Check Spelling as you type and check Grammar as you type)
Hmm. There seems to be a bug/feature to the effect that if the document did not change since the spellchecker was run last time, then it pops up with “The spell check is complete.” message and does nothing. By just changing one character it runs OK the next time.
At least it does that on mine, Version 4.0.3.3 (Build ID: 400m0(Build:3)).
