ive done some thing and i dont know what
i tried to mone my outlook copied folders from thunderbird on xp to my thundwebird on mint15 and this iw what has happened ans i cannot open them
the files that i moved have appeared in the menu pane on the left as folders
First question are you using POP3 or IMAP for your mail account?
If your using IMAP there should be no reason to move the folders.
POP3 bt apparently do do imap
I would urge you to change to IMAP as you can open your email and send messages from any computer using any operating system and almost any email program.
Have you tried the Thunderbird on-line help system they have a lot of information about moving your email from one computer to another.
hi thanks
ill see about moving to imap first then try to sort out my mess ;D
Do i need to Cancel my current pop mail account
the reason i ask is that when i tried to set up a new imap account it dosnt want to know
Run:
sudo apt-get install tree
then
tree -d ~/.thunderbird > ~/thunderbird-directories.txt
You’ll then find a file called thunderbird-directories.txt in your home folder … attach that to your next posting.
For now, forget IMAP … you can do that if you wish once we’ve sorted out your mail folders … though webmail is probably the way forward eventually.

Question … is EVERYTHING you want in Thunderbird in XP ?
if so, why don’t you just copy the whole profile from XP … that’s probably the directory called szhyvx4z.default … to your ~/.thunderbird directory (the hidden one in your home folder) … then set that as the default profile by editing:-
~/.thunderbird/profiles.ini
??
Be sure to do this with Thunderbird CLOSED.
Sorry mark i wouldnt even know where to start to do this
IS EVERYTHING you want in the XP profile you copied across … or have you been downloading mail into the Linux profile ?
and
Did you copy the WHOLE of this directory from XP - szhyvx4z.default ?
Mark Greaves (PCNetSpec) post:11:
IS EVERYTHING you want in the XP profile you copied across … or have you been downloading mail into the Linux profile ?
Not shure what i did i dont even know how the file got into thunderbird in the first place
all i did was copy it over to my files and there it was when i opened thunderbird again
D\id you copy the WHOLE of this directory from XP - szhyvx4z.default ?
the whole directory is copied
What’s the contents of this file:
gedit ~/.thunderbird/profiles.ini
?
ron@ron-GA-78LMT-USB3 ~ $ gedit ~/.thunderbird/profiles.ini
The program ‘gedit’ is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install gedit
Which text editor does Mint15 use by default then ?
Are you using the MATE desktop ?
try:
pluma ~/.thunderbird/profiles.ini
dunno :-[ Pluma ? and Mate
so installed gedit and here is ther result
[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=5a5qnwpd.default
OK, little experiment (don’t panic, we’re backing up first) … CLOSE Thunderbird, then open a terminal and run these commands in sequence:
cp -r ~/.thunderbird ~/.thunderbird-backup
(if that command errors … STOP, and tell me the error)
then
mv ~/.thunderbird/5a5qnwpd.default ~/.thunderbird/5a5qnwpd.broken
then
mv ~/.thunderbird/5a5qnwpd.broken/Mail/"Local Folders"/szhyvx4z.default ~/.thunderbird/szhyvx4z.default
then
gedit ~/.thunderbird/profiles.ini
and make it read:-
[General]
StartWithLastProfile=1
[Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=szhyvx4z.default
SAVE the file.
Now open Thunderbird … is all your mail there ?
ron@ron-GA-78LMT-USB3 ~ $ mv “~/.thunderbird/5a5qnwpd.broken/Mail/Local Folders/szhyvx4z.default” ~/.thunderbird/szhyvx4z.default
mv: cannot stat ‘~/.thunderbird/5a5qnwpd.broken/Mail/Local Folders/szhyvx4z.default’: No such file or directory
ron@ron-GA-78LMT-USB3 ~ $
kind makes sense that there is no file
ill reload it back on to my memory stick
ill reload it back on to my memory stick
NO … stop getting ahead of me …
Just change that command to:
mv ~/.thunderbird/5a5qnwpd.broken/Mail/"Local Folders"/szhyvx4z.default ~/.thunderbird/szhyvx4z.default
then carry on
I’ll fix it above too

Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible
