Ubuntu set up

Good Morning Guys,

I’m having a few dilemnas with regard to setting up through Ubuntu, I have a few questions that I can’t find the answers to anywhere…

I’ll start from the beginning…

I’m looking to set up my OS as Ubuntu from Windows XP, I’m on a shared network with shared emails, file access etc. The other pc’s at the moment will be staying on Windows as my system is being used as a pilot.

I understand from what I’ve read that file sharing between different OS works fine, I know I can open word/excel files etc without hassle which is great. My query is with regards to the shared inboxes, is it possible to access these the same way as with Outlook?

I’m also struggling to set up my USB as a boot system as I can’t locate the ISO file needed.

I was going to install Ubuntu on a seperate HD so that I could switch back to the original set up if needed however it seems that the other towers I have picked apart in the office are from the dark ages and so doing this is no longer an option, is there a way of successfully having both on one HD without causing problems?

Can anyone help a Ubuntu novice look fantastic in front of her colleagues??? :o

Thanks guys
Linz

Hi mrsj84, aand welcome to the forum.

First, let’s start with what may be a problem … when you say “shared inboxes” what do you mean ?

is it possible to access these the same way as with Outlook?

Do you mean shared at the ISP mailserver end, or does Outlook download them automatically, then you want access to shared Outlook mail boxes ?

In other words, are we talking about “local/LAN” Outlook mailboxes ?

I'm also struggling to set up my USB as a boot system as I can't locate the ISO file needed.

If you’ve already downloaded the ISO image … you ccan search the system for *.iso to try find where it waas downloaded

If you haven’t already downloaded an ISO image, and you’re after Ubuntu 12.04 … here are two direct download links:-

for 32bit Ubuntu 12.04 LTS desktop edition:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-i386.iso

for 64bit Ubuntu 12.04 LTS desktop edition:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso

or the download mirror is here:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04/

Just download the ISO to your desktop … then use the Universal USB Installer from pendrivelinux:

to create the LiveUSB

There’s a tutorial for creating a LiveUSB for Peppermint here:
http://linuxforums.org.uk/index.php?topic=10313.msg76514#msg76514
and if you substitute the word Peppermint for Ubuntu … it should be pretty easy to translate.

is there a way of successfully having both on one HD without causing problems?

YES … but it will require you to resize the Windows partiton … this can be done using Gparted from the Ubuntu LiveUSB you’re using … but I must point out that with ANY partition manipulation there is a small risk of corruption, so backing up anything you can’t afford to loose first is a VERY good idea … the risk is VERY small, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t point it out

Shall we take this one step at a time … first answer my question about your mail setup, and have a go at creating the LiveUSB … once you’re happy you want to install Ubuntu, and have the LiveUSB created, we’ll move on to the partition resizing and install.

Sound about right to you ?
