Hi Guys
a few days ago I installed Win 7 on my wifes desktop and peppermint 3 on her laptop, since then I can’t connect to the USB printer connected to the Win 7 PC with either the laptop (Peppermint 3) or my PC also Peppermint 3 all on the same network
on the Laptop when I try to connect through System Tools-Printing-Network Printer-Windows Printer via Samba The domain shows up (MSHOME) and the Win 7 Pc shows up (Windows1) but when I select Windows1 no printers show up , It’s exactly the same when i try to connect with my PC except I’m prompted for a password after selecting Windows1.
I’ve made sure the printer is shared in Win 7 and I had no problems connecting to the printer when her PC was running Win XP
Any help would be much appreciated
Graeme
Change the Win7 PC’s workgroup to WORKGROUP
or the Peppermint boxes workgroup to MSHOME
[EDIT]
Then make sure “File and Printer Sharing” is enabled on the Win7 box … and make sure the printer is shared.
How do I check what domain the Linux boxes are set to ?
I’ve changed the Win 7 PC to WORKGROUP but there’s nothing listed now under WORKGROUP in the printer SMB Browser, the only item listed under MSHOME is FREENAS in spite of the fact that I’ve changed the domain in Freenas from MSHOME to WORKGROUP
is it possible to do away with MSHOME and have everything on WORKGROUP to save all this confusion, I don’r see any point in having 2 domains on on one network
Graeme
Linux boxes will be set to WORKGROUP by default … but you’ll need to reboot ALL PC’s for the changes to the network to be picked up.
Also, see the edit above.
Still no luck
File & Printer sharing is enabled and the printer is shared on the Windows machine and I rebooted all machines, The windows PC is not shown on either MSHOME or WORKGROUP in the Add Printer dialogue box, Only the Freenas Server is showing under MSHOME but I don’t understand tah as I changed that to WORKGROUP in the Freenas Web Gui and rebooted
I don’t know what else I can tell you that would be helpful

can you navigate to the printer in pcmanfm (peppermints file manager) ?
Is your Win 7 connects to Homegroup or Work network?
HomeGroups only work on PCs running Windows 7 – if your network includes computers running earlier versions of Windows,
Linux or Mac OS, use the Workgroup options instead.
can you navigate to the printer in pcmanfm (peppermints file manager) ?
No, that is assuming I’m following the right path, I went home-Go-Network Drives-Windows Network, at that point I have 2 folders MSHOME & WORKGROUP , MSHOME will open the freenas drives but WORKGROUP won’t open
Is your Win 7 connects to Homegroup or Work network?
I’m sure it’s set up for Work, I’ve never set up Homegroup
Graeme
Did you restart the Win7 box after changing to WORKGROUP ?
Did you restart the Win7 box after changing to WORKGROUP ?
Yes but to be sure I just rebooted all machines (including Win7) again but it still won’t connect
Graeme
Thank you for that
The settings on my PC were exactly the same I rebooted the Windows machine again, but still no luck
Graeme
Could the problem be the the “Local Domain Name” in the router settings, on mine I have the SSID name instead of “WORKGROUP”
Just a thought
Graeme
have you got samba and smbclient installed in Peppermint ?
have you got samba and smbclient installed in Peppermint ?
Yes installed on both machines
Do you know the Win7 boxes IP ?
What happens if you enter:-
smb://
eg.
smb://192.168.1.5
in pcmanfm’s address bar and hit enter.
–
What happens if you enter:-smb://
A dialogue box appears showing username & Domain (WORKGROUP) prompting for a password, i typed in the Win7 password and a directory opened up liisting 4 folders (ADMIN$, C$, print$ and Users)

Are you SURE you’ve got password protected sharing turned OFF in Win7 ?
