Have you done a full upgrade of the system? Do you get errors from the following?
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -s dist-upgrade
That looks like it fixed the tex-common configuration error … are you NOW able to update and install stuff ?
–
I rebooted then ran Muon Update Manager and that opened but without the menu bar at the top. So I tried to install kdenlive via terminal and that gave this;

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
kdenlive : Depends: kdenlive-data (= 0.9.6-5ubuntu1) but 0.9.10-0ubuntu0~sunab~precise1 is to be installed
Recommends: recordmydesktop but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
I also tried to grab muon as a screenshot but the program to do that has gone, as has LOADS of other programs…
I’m thinking this was such a waste of time, it would have been easier to install 14.04 on the ‘spare’ partition and leave 12.04 alone…
Your PPA’s still seem to be pointing at the “precise” version
kdenlive : Depends: kdenlive-data (= 0.9.6-5ubuntu1) but 0.9.10-0ubuntu0~sunab~precise1 is to be installed Recommends: recordmydesktop but it is not going to be installed
In fact I wouldn’t have recommended a UPGRADE from 12.04 to 14.04 without having reverted to the default repos and having sorted out any issues with doing that FIRST.
You wanna keep trying to fix this, or just do a fresh 14.04 install ?
I’d like to try and fix it as I’d got everything set up as I wanted it.
Re the repo’s, can’t I just remove them from the list?
No you’ll need to use ppa-purge one at a time on each PPA

Have you seen? package management - Tex-common troubleshooting on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS - Ask Ubuntu
Which mentions a bug: Bug #1236951 “package tex-common 4.04 failed to install/upgrade:...” : Bugs : tex-common package : Ubuntu
Yeah, I did a search and found the ask Ubuntu one and thought, Great, NOT the solution I wanted.
So Mark, what do you suggest? or are you still searching for a solution?
