USB ports, and now my browser non-functioning

Hmmm…

When I went to DL the file I clicked the link and it gave me the save option as per the attached screenshot. i.e. it seemed to only give me the one option to burn to disc. I hadn’t realised you could right click to override that.

I have managed to find the .iso file in Temp, so it’s all systems go again

Thanks

Ahh … you should have clicked “Save” rather than “Open” … but at least you found it

Well I succeeded to boot into Peppermint from the stick!

I see from the ‘install’ thread that you go from trying the OS from a stick to installing it then modifying it.

My next step is to get the Aspire to connect to wi-fi, will such changes be saved to the OS on the stick? Or shouldn’t I start tweaking without doing an install first?

(Please say if I should now take further discussion to the install thread)

p.s. Does this OS have an equivalent of Eject Disc or Unmount?

If you created a persistence file during creation of the LiveUSB stick … changes like connecting to wireless, or installing software WILL be saved to the stick for the next time you boot the stick.

BUT

They will NOT be transferred across when you do an install to the SSD, and will have to be repeated.

Make sense ?

[EDIT]

p.s. Does this OS have an equivalent of Eject Disc or Unmount?

I’m not sure what you mean … you cannot unmount a running OS … but you can shut down, then remove the USB stick … or do you mean for the SD card ?

[EDIT 2]

And yes, please move over to the Peppermint tutorial page, but only if/when you decide to install Peppermint.

Looking good so far, I’m connected to wi-fi now

Right I see what you mean about changes to the OS on the stick vs on the SSD.

My question about Eject/Unmount was a ‘just in case’ question, in case I remove the stick without doing the correct procedure and manage to muck things up again. But of course you’re right, I can’t remove it anyway while the AA1 is on ::slight_smile:

I’m seriously considering going ahead and installing the OS. Not least because having the stick sticking out of the AA1 when in use for a few weeks out and about seems rather a liability… hmmm. Can you suggest what any risks might be in going ahead and doing this?

p.s. Edit to add:
Good point re: the SD card, do you have to go through an eject procedure on that? I’m asking before I consider trying the SD to see if it can be read.

Can you suggest what any risks might be in going ahead and doing this?

As long as your SSD is working … NONE … just be sure to back up any user files first (docs, pics, etc.) as the SSD will be wiped

If your SSD is faulty, you’re going to need to replace it even with Linpus … and you still have the fallback of the LiveUSB until you can do that.

Mark, you are a scholar as well as a gent.

2 days ago I was ready to literally bin my netbook, and now having gone through all 11 stages of the tutorial it is back and working, and better than it ever had been. Yes the tutorial is lengthy, but it is very clearly explained, so once I had the OS on the stick I had no further issues at all, and I’m not naturally very techie either!

Many thanks for your help.

Glad you’ve got it up & running. Hope you enjoy Peppermint 2.

Any questions be sure to ask.

You’re more than welcome  … have a good holiday.

I just spotted this in one of your previous postings:-

To eject the SD before removing it

Click the menu button bottom left … then click File Manager (or open your Home directory, or anything that opens the file manager).

You’ll then see the SD card in the left hand column … if there is a little arrow symbol next to it … click that arrow, that wil unmount the SD card and the arrow wil disappear, it’s now safe to unplug the SD card.

if there is no arrow, it’s not mounted … click the name of the SD card in the left hand column, and it will be automagically mounted, and the arrow will appear.

Great. I’ve even just now posted photos from the SD card directly to Facebook. Now I can share some pictures while I’m on holiday rather than only afterwards.

I’m not sure if you recall what a nightmare/impossibility that used to be under Linpus Lite!

Thx

I don’t use Fekbook, but yeh … pretty much anything was a pain if Firefox 2

So I take it you’re liking PeppermintOS then

I’m nomadic so all my friends and family are abroad, well except my wife. So at times Fekbook is the simplest way to keep in touch with them en masse. That said I don’t like it either, so I ensure I use it, rather then it me. Made up user name, only 20 ‘Friends’, no personal profile info, don’t use any Apps etc…

Yes I’m impressed with Peppermint2 so far. So much easier than LL where you could bust the OS just by doing something incorrectly with an SD card or stick.!.

I’m not necessarily making any judgement calls about Facebook or its users, the missus couldn’t live without it, and I suppose it’s very handy for some … it’s just not for me.

I suppose I’m just stuck in my old ways, and still use email, skype, and dropbox etc.

I had a quick look once … and though I can take a PC apart and rebuild it with my eyes closed, and sort out just about any problem, software or hardware, my missus and kids thought it very funny that I couldn’t make head nor tail out of Facebook

Understand.
The thing I really don’t like about it is how stealthy it is in trying to continuously break your privacy. And ‘since you signed up to share, how can you complain about sharing’ eh?

Heh … you’d be whispering in the wind complaining anyway, not to mention they seem to lock accounts for no apparent reason then refuse to say why … nah, not for me.
