What have i touched? Again!! (SOLVED)

What’s the output from:

cp -vf /usr/share/lxpanel/profile/Peppermint/panels/panel ~/.config/lxpanel/Peppermint/panels/panel

and

lxpanelctl restart

also …

what’s the output from:

ls -al /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Are you able to make a window fill the screen ?

johngrigg@johngrigg-AOA150 ~ $ cp -vf /usr/share/lxpanel/profile/Peppermint/panels/panel ~/.config/lxpanel/Peppermint/panels/panel
/usr/share/lxpanel/profile/Peppermint/panels/panel' -> /home/johngrigg/.config/lxpanel/Peppermint/panels/panel’
johngrigg@johngrigg-AOA150 ~ $ lxpanelctl restart
johngrigg@johngrigg-AOA150 ~ $ ls -al /etc/X11/xorg.conf
ls: cannot access /etc/X11/xorg.conf: No such file or directory
johngrigg@johngrigg-AOA150 ~ $
so thats what i got, still cant make it fill a screen.
Is it a coincidence about the battery warning that appeared today? It is plugged in to the mains but still get warning. wonder if linked to power management you talked about?
john

Yeah most likely a coincidence … but you could always test the theory by rebooting with the battery removed.

The only reason I asked about the jupiter power manager is because that has an option to change screen resolution, and I wondered if you’d accidentally hit that.

What’s the output from:

dpkg -l | grep jupiter

Do you get a full screen during bootup ?

Does hitting Ctrl+Esc or Alt+F1 cause the menu to be displayed … ie. could the panel already be running, but off the bottom of the screen ?

no output from above command, hitting ctrl and esc did cause the menu to come up, 2 the same in fact! gonna try rebooting without battery
john

no change from re booting. how do i check what power management i have running mark?
just wondering if upgrading to peppermint 4 will make it all good again?, still have no menu bar like before, strange.
john

If it returned nothing, you don’t have jupiter installed then.

If the menu appeared, lxpanel MUST be running. … so I’m guessing it’s somewhere off the bottom of the screen.

As you say you CAN move the mouse pointer to the black bars, are you able to move say a file manager window partially into the black bars

This has me baffled … you can’'t have received any updates, as there aren’t any for Peppermint 2 any more.

If a Peppermint 4 LiveCD works, then yeah installing Peppermint 4 will … why not create a Peppermint 4 LiveUSB and see if it boots properly.

Mark, thanks for all your assistance with this.
Not able to ove anything into the black bars. The only thing i remember touching was right clicking in the task bar,i think panel settings? do not know if i can do any damage in there?
i will try the peppermint 4, if my old dell lappy will allow.
john

yes i can move the icons from the homepage to the black bars.
Error moving file: Not a directory, if i try to drop it there
john

Before trying Peppermint 4 … post the output from

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep -i pae

so I can check if your system will work with Peppermint 4

Effectively, if there’s any output with pae in it … it WILL support Peppermint 4’s PAE kernel

if there’s NO output, you’ll have to use Peppermint 3.

Oddly, Pepermint 3 will be supported fro longer than Peppermint 4 … soo you may want to choose that anyway.

I thought this was an AA1 netbook … or is it a Dell netbook ?

In light of your statement that it happened after chanaging the panel settings, can we try one more thing before reinstalling a later version of Peppermint.

Let’s rename the lxpanel directory, then log off/on again … it should then get recreated with the default settings.

Open a terminal and run:

mv -v ~/.config/lxpanel ~/.config/lxpanel-old

then

lxsession-logout

and log out

Then log back on by selecting your username, and entering your password.

hi mark
i have created the usb and is inserted in the acer, i’m quite happy to go ahead and install peppermint 4. But i can remove the usb and try the above just to see if it works?, just for peace of mind.
i’m having trouble getting started with pep 4 anyway so not a problem
john

cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep -i pae
flags : fpu vme de tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca cmov pat clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe constant_tsc arch_perfmon pebs bts aperfmperf pni dtes64 monitor ds_cpl est tm2 ssse3 xtpr pdcm movbe lahf_lm dts

yes it ia an acer, the dell was for creating the usb
john

mark!!!
it worked, that last thing you got me to do, it worked!!! have full screen once more!
THANK YOU so much!
So what did i do wrong? I touched something i bet?
I posted the findings from the peppermint 4 thingy you asked for, to see if my acer can handle it. I should take the jump and go for it. I will hang on to see if i need the 3 or 4 version.
Thanks agin
john

You must have changed some setting in the panel then … god knows what would cause the issue you described though :o

I couldn’t find any setting for the panel that reproduced your issue in my panel … but maybe it’s a bug that’s specific to PM2

Either way, you now know how to reset the panel if necessary

[EDIT]

If you ever decide to upgrade … your AA1 DOES support PAE … so you can use Peppermint 3 OR 4, or even (most likely) 5 when it comes out around May/June 2014

thanks mark
i should upgrade, i know i should, just so very pleased to get my netbook back how it should be!
i have the usb all ready to go!
john

Up to you, but you may as well wait till Peppermint 5 now … which will be based on the Ubuntu 14.04 long term support release.

thanks mark
That might be the best bet, won’t have to worry for a few years then ;D
Thanks for all the problem solving, always appreciated.
john

You’re most welcome
