or windows 8 full stop
This is getting just better and better.
For just £60.00 you could have:
1.2 GHz Dual Core Rockchip 3066 Android Mini PC 1GB DDR3 RAM
You can also read up on it here:
No word on Linux distros for it just yet.
Yet another leap forward, but all of them appear to be missing something … this one is missing “known Linux support” … lets hope someone cracks that fairly quickly because the spec is pretty awesome for the price
dear santa i have been a good boy and looked after my gnu every day so can i please have one of of the above for xmas
yours greenian2
This might be because it proves to be difficult to keep up with the flood of new ARM devices
Yup … almost positively the reason, but until someone does it, it’s still “missing”, and I’m too lazy/tight to buy one and try myself
[EDIT]
You can also safely bet that by the time someone has got a working Linux image out for it, another peice of kit will have been released that’s both higher spec and cheaper … but again, no Linux image … and the merry-go-round continues
All I’m saying is at some point someone will bring one out with everything in place … and probably sell loads of em, like Raspberry have.
(or the market will get bored of them)
You are rght, there is absolutely no chance to keep up with the new devices.
Say for example this Raspbery Pi inspired offering:
UPuter Pi development board: $69 Allwinner A10 mini PC+ Shipping and tax
CPU 1.5GHz ARM Cortex-A8 multi-core Mali400 graphic engine.Memory 512M/1GB DDR3
As a device with an Allwinner A10 processor, the UPuter Pi should be able to run a range of operating systems including Android 4.0, but also Ubuntu, Fedora, and other Linux-based operating systems.http://liliputing.com/2012/08/uputer-pi-development-board-69-allwinner-a10-mini-pc.html
More info here:
What we need is one with a good spec (say the dual core Rockchip, 1GB, HDMI, Wireless, GPIO, 2x USB, and maybe VGA and Gb ethernet), that’s also cheap.
That then needs some time (and preferably a recognised name behind it), before something better comes out … so it can gain a software development lead.
So everything else that comes out afterwards needs to match or better it.
So I guess what I’m saying is we need a second generation high spec RasPi-II … which I’ll bet appears eventually.
I have no doubt things will settle down eventually … there’s nothing new in the way this is playing out, it’s just a new (and unknown) market sector. New market sectors normally see a flurry where manufacturers try to become dominant … the good news is that thanks to the RasPi they started off low cost, so the only real scope for improvement/dominance is in spec and support
So I guess what I'm saying is we need a second generation high spec RasPi-II ;) .. which I'll bet appears eventually.Well, it is moving towards that.
Now Raspberry Pi has announced that anyone who wants support for those codecs can pay extra to enable them. An MPEG-2 license is available for $3.79, and VC-1 codec support runs $1.90.http://liliputing.com/2012/08/raspberry-pi-adds-mpeg-2-vc-1-support-for-media-center-users-for-a-fee.html
they are offerring model B with a case ;D
Here is another one:
cubieboard
1G ARM cortex-A8 processor, NEON, VFPv3, 512KB L2 cache Mali400, OpenGL ES GPU 1GB DDR3 @480MHz HDMI 1080p Output 100M Ethernet 4GB Nand Flash 2 USB Host, 1 MMC slot, 1 SATA, 1 ir 96 extend pin including i2c, spi, lcd, sensors, ..And it supports Linux:
Fedora ARM is going to be ported, Puppy Linux and Arch Arm Linux is already ready to run on cubieboard. Debian can run on this board, but not official. We will try to get Debian official support. All ports, I2C, spi are all available under Linux.Cost $49 although not yet available to buy. http://cubieboard.org/ Some pictures: http://cubieboard.org/2012/09/02/some-pictures-of-cubieboard/

Yet again … Oooooh!!! that’s the one
IR and SATA are nice touches.
What’s the betting something better is announced before it ships :o
Yes, the SATA is a bonus and no bets, the odds are that it may well be true.
However the 512mb ram prototype you could buy now for $45 + $8.96 shipping to UK.
That is if you do not mind shopping on AliExpress:
Tempting ???
That Rockchip 3066 one from Oval Elephant went up in price somewhat:
Nearer £90, than £60 … which seems WAY too expensive to me.
Hmm. That would be $90 not £90. ???
Ooops :-[ … my mistake.
i not too sure about this one
Is there not a list for all these mini ARM PC/boards?
It’s just that I’m in talks with my mum, and she thinks getting one of these boards and putting Android on it, will keep my youngest brother/sister away from her laptop and mines.
Needs to be something cheap, 30-50 quid.
Is there not a list for all these mini ARM PC/boards?Are you volunteering to trawl through this topic to make the list?
It's just that I'm in talks with my mum, and she thinks getting one of these boards and putting Android on it, will keep my youngest brother/sister away from her laptop and mines. Most (if not all) come with Android pre-installed onto the internal flash. You might as well get the Raspberry PI plus case for £35.99: https://www.modmypi.com/shop/raspberry-pi-cases/raspberry-pi-and-modmypi-case SD card, power supply and leads. You might just make it under the £50
True cost of Rasberry Pi:
Stick debian on it and away you go:
http://www.raspbian.org/
Or wait a little bit and then you could have Android to play with:
http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/1700
I guess so, why not? It would make life easier for everyone.
I meant the price of the actual board itself, as I have everything in a spares box in the cupboard.
It’s gonna be mounted to the back of the TV so I’m not to worried about the bits and bobs that come after the board. Just need to find something that comes with Android, preferably Jelly Bean, and has a SATA/SD slot (or both). 1GB of memory would be sufficient I think, and of course a HDMI/VGA slot.
