"Cannot write bytes: Broken pipe" Error [Solved]

Yes, I mounted the hard drive space for the Ubuntu and I found the log in the filesystem in /var/log

And yes, I have a wireless connection.

Running mount grep | media returns:

/dev/sda5 on /media/4f5c14f0-d3c7-4f6a-96f2-775e8acf1a9d type ext4 (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=udisks)

OK, open the Xorg log file (from the hard drive), and post its contents to pastebin.com:
http://pastebin.com/
hit “submit” … then post the URL of your pastebin back here.

and I’ll see if anything jumps out

Here you go:

http://pastebin.com/rBhXAqL5

Boot without the LiveCD, and do whatever you did to get to a console … log on … run:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-video-vesa xserver-xorg-video-fbdev xserver-xorg-video-intel

When that finishes, try rebooting normally.

for clarity, that’s

sudo apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-video-vesa xserver-xorg-video-fbdev xserver-xorg-video-intel

It worked!!!

Thank you so much!

What exactly was the issue though? Had I accidentally deleted something?

can’t say what caused it (as I don’t know everything you did)… I can only go on what the log told me

So we reinstalled the packages that contained those modules

Ah, I see.

I’ll take care to be more cautious when attempting something like this next time.

Regardless, I learned some new things about the system, so thank you for that and for helping me!
(And I must confess, I was driven to this forum from desperation, though I am not from the UK.)

You’re most welcome … Canadians are always welcome too you know

[EDIT[

Though for Christ sake (and mine), keep it English, not French ;D

No need to worry, my French is really quite terrible!!

I’m willing to bet it’s not as bad as mine … I can say “fish” and “small peas” and that’s about it

[EDIT]

And to make matters worse … if I ever find myself in France, and hungry … I don’t even like fish and small peas :o

OK, Well you’d win that bet haha : D

Hi,

I have the same error i tried to follow same foot steps as of Jim however, no luck please help!

That’s a PRIVATE pastebin, so nobody other than you can see it.

Might also help if you can mention when the broken pipe started occuring, what had you just done, and where/when do you get the error ?

ohhh so sorry.

plus, recently i was trying to install OpenCV 2.4.9 and it went wrong i had make errors. but at the end i just deleted the entire folder of the OpenCV which was in my home folder which contained all of the depedencies and libraries.

M waiting in the Live cd… please help… since last week i haven’t had any luck with my UB 12.04 precise pangolin.

I couldn’t install stuff! I have to get past this broken pipe! :frowning:

i get the error at the boot itself. I had just installed the Opencv and it’s libraries however i uninstalled(Physically removed by Ctrl+Shift+delete) them.

That’s all

So you can boot, but you can’t install anything ?
are there any errors from:

sudo apt-get update

?

hello,

i had done nothing else after OpenCV folder deletion. Now when i boot, Ubuntu logo comes up and afterwards i get the error can’t write bytes : pipe broken on a blank black screen. that’s all.

i am not able to go to normal Ubuntu desktop, however, i can get into my console.

please help.

hello,

sorry to bother you. I have no luck while getting to console. Previously i could by pressing ctrl+alt+F1 or F2 i can’t recall.

I tried booting from Live Pendrive and doing code: mount grep media.

and then i restarted booted by normal Ub and then tried pressing ctrl+alt+F1/F2

no luck

I installed Ub 14.04 LTS. Don’t bother to reply.
