CD Ripping

Guys what programme would you recommend for CD ripping? I want to put mp3 music files off my netbook onto CDS. I bought a retro radio CD player ( that looks 1930s) to play old music on but I can’t get my data stick which has mp3s to play on it, but CDs work great on it.

I got it second hand off Ebay and the seller said the mp3 worked for her, so I dunno why it won’t work for me.

But anyway CDs are probably better as having a data stick sticking out of the socket ruins the illusion of listening to an old wireless!

I’ll have to get an external CD drive because my netbook hasn’t got one.

I have Audacity on my netbook for music files, but don’t know if it rips CDs as well.

Hi Melissa.

If you have the MP3 files on your netbook, then you have already ripped them, so simply copying them to a CD (like to a USB stick) might work, unless the CD player expects only CD-formatted files. Copying them from netbook to a CD will be fine to play them on a PC but not sure about a CD player.
Other, more experienced, Forum members will be able to provide better advice.

Keith

CD players normally expect wav files, not mp3, so you need to convert them before burning the disk. Here’s a tutorial:

Thanks guys. I used the wrong term- yes got lots of mp3s. I know how to convert them to wav. I didn’t know that CDs should be wav; that’s useful to know.

What programme should I use to put the files onto CDs once I get an external CD drive?

As that tutorial says, whatever disk burner you get with your distro should do the job. I have a thing called xfburn which starts by offering 4 options: blank disk, create data disk, create installation disk, and create audio disk. Simple!

Just had a quick look at the tutorial and then saved it to my Pocket. I now remember using Brasero a few years ago on an earlier Peppermint distro with an old laptop. It worked fine.

I suppose I’d have to find it in the package manager?

Hello Melissa.

You will find Brasero in System-Tools/Software, which is generally easier to use than Package Manager.

Keith

Thanks Keith. I will be getting the CD/DVD drive next Friday. I’ll let you know how I get on then!

Guys there’s no CD ripping software anywhere on my netbook. This includes both the software manager and the package managers!

I’m on Peppermint 9 distro. Brasero or Asunder should be there but they are not.

I’m right frustrated! I am dying to rip some CDS.

Hello Melissa.

Try:

sudo apt update

then

sudo apt install brasero

Keith

Thanks Keith- there seems to be some problem with all that—

No such luck Keith!

OK. I’ll have a think.

Melisssa,
Try

sudo apt install clementine

and have a look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPkEHiSsVDc

Keith

Have you tried xfburn?

Thank you. Very odd that they are not there in the Peppermint distro.

It’s not in the package manager nor the software manager either. I looked online for names of all the Linux CD ripping software and none are in my package managers! This is very odd.

Melissa,

The link I gave earlier is a Youtube video entitled “Ripping CDs In Peppermint with Clementine” so is definitely worth a look.
Here it is again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPkEHiSsVDc
