I only using the stock themes available in Docky I’ve tried each of them one at a time in panel mode, non panel mode, 3D background 2D background I’ve run out of options
Just as a test I installed Docky on my wifes PC also running PM4 and it’s doing exactly the same, however I have an installation of Linux Lite that I haven’t used in ages and I installed Docky on that and it works perfectly

OK, this is now OFFICIALLY weird … if nobody else is having this issue (and if they were it would have come up on the Peppermint forum), we have to try work out what YOUR PC’s have running on them that everyone else’s doesn’t

OK, I can’t spot anything in those that’s common to all 3 and missing in mine :o
That said, the only one that was running docky at the time was Chloe’s … and for some reason that seemed to be running docky in debug mode.

OK, let’s try Plank instead of Docky … Plank is by the same people as Docky, but gets rid of the dependence on mono (so it’s a true Linux app) and gconf … it stores its shortcuts as plain text files so if you need to edit them manually it’s MUCH easier, and is lighter than Docky.
Apparently (or so I read) Docky3 if it ever happens (and it may not) will use the Plank underlying code (vala) rather than mono.
As yet it’s missing a couple of the features of Docky … such as a GUI settings panel (has to be done through a text file), and the icons don’t GROW as you mouse-over them.
It does however work better than Docky where no compositor is present … though you loose access to the themes without a compositor.

Anywho … to install Plank (don’t be thrown by the PPA name … as I said it’s by the same people as Docky):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/docky
then
sudo apt-get update
then
sudo apt-get install plank
then
sudo apt-get upgrade
Now make sure Docky isn’t running, and fire up Plank from the menu (menu > Accessories > Plank)
If it works properly … uninstall Docky with:
sudo apt-get remove --purge docky
then
sudo apt-get autoremove
then a little cleaning up if you wish:
rm -v ~/.config/autostart/docky.desktop
and
rm -rv ~/.gconf/apps/docky-2
and
rm -rv ~/.cache/docky
To make Plank autostart:
cp -v /usr/share/applications/plank.desktop ~/.config/autostart/
REMEMBER … drag the SSB shortcuts from ~/.local/share/applications to Plank
Planks config file (for tweaking themes, screen position, etc.) is at:
gedit ~/.config/plank/dock1/stettings
it’s all pretty self-explanatory, but gimme a shout if you have any questions.
And before you ask … YES it is possible to remove the “Plank” icon from the dock … ask if you wanna know how

Thanks for that but unfortunately Plank doesn’t work either as it won’t make space when I drag an icon onto it preventing me from dropping the icon in.
I’ve tried it from the desktop, ~/.local/share/applications & /usr/share/applications and I see nothing wrong in the config file preventing drag & drop

Plank doesn’t spread the icons during a drag/drop like Docky … you just drop them anywhere on the dockbar
If that still doesn’t work, you can easily add the icons manually.
check out the files (and their contents) at this location
~/.config/plank/dock1/launchers
and see if you can work it out … if not,let me know.
Just as a matter of interest which version of pcmanfm are you running ?

Don’t know about you but to be honest this isn’t worth the stress,
I understand I can add the icons manually but if I can’t drag & drop it’s not suitable and I don’t want to waste your time or anyone elses on a 10 page epic trying to get a launcher to do what it’s meant to do in the first place like it does for everybody else
Cairo Dock works ok other than the SSB problem so I can use that for normal applications and place the SSB icons on the desktop

Your right as I’m the only one with this issue it’s not worth the effort it’s just more frustrating than anything
As it is the only common denominator I can think of between all 3 PC’s that it wont work with is the installation CD and I suppose that can open up a whole can of worms so I think I should gracefully concede defeat unless you can give me an obvious reason why I can only drop 1 SSB into Cairo Dock if not I’ll just leave it as is

HOLD ON … I think I’ve cracked this.
It appears it IS to do with the version of libfm and pcmanfm that’s installed by default in Peppermint 4 … I’m running later versions from my personal PPA.
I just want to drop back to the default versions to test.
Already tested on a LiveCD with persistence, and adding my PPA fixed the drag/drop to docky
Gimme half hour … and reinstall docky if you’ve removed it.
Yup it is.
First let me explain something … upgrading to the versions in my PPA solves a LOT of problems, the only 2 NEW problems are
a) manually typing file locations into the pcmanfm address bar for file locations with spaces in their name (and on a network, eg. NAS) can be a bit weird … but BROWSING works perfectly.
(don’t ask me why … but who ever types them in anyway, right )
b) you’ll have to recreate any pcmanfm bookmarks … as they’re now stored in a different place.
If you want to upgrade to the version in my PPA (and this IS undoable if you don’t like it):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mark-pcnetspec/pcmanfm
then
sudo apt-get update
then
sudo apt-get upgrade
then
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Now log off, and back on ← this is IMPORTANT to reload the desktop
Now test drag/drop on docky … test it a few times, because it didn’t work the first time I dragged something there … but it did on the third attempt, from then on it works every time. (was probably still starting up).

I’m guessing everyone else has either learned to live with it, or doesn’t realise you’re supposed to be able to drag/drop … because nobody else has mentioned it :o
I’m not going to push that version as a Peppermint update due to the NEW issue … even though it’s minor.
If I change the version nobody’s complaining about, you can guarantee they will
Even if a new version is released that fixes that new issue, just having to recreate the bookmarks would p*ss off as lot of people.
