HP Vista Laptop conversion

OK, when you boot to the LiveUSB, and select “Try Ubuntu”… when you get to the desktop, is there an icon called “Install Ubuntu” on the desktop ?

Yes

(",)

PS Read the link, & it looks like french to me :-[

OK, boot to the LiveUSB, select “Try Ubuntu”… when you are at the desktop, open a terminal (CTRL+Alt+T) and enter:

ls -l /usr/lib/ubiquity/apt-setup/generators/40cdrom

hit enter, and post back the output.

BTW, those are lower case L’s not 1’s

ctrl+alt+t is doing nothing… what’s the longhand to opening a terminal?

(",)

Depends on whether you’re running the Unity desktop, or not

Click the application lens on the sidebar (magnifying glass with a + in it) then enter terminal in the Search Applications box, and hit enter, or click the terminal icon.

or if you have no sidebar, ie. you’re not running the Unity desktop… on the top panel, go to Applications>Accessories>Terminal

[EDIT]

another way, is to hit Alt+F2
enter -
gnome-terminal
and hit enter.

Gotcha

OK according to that bug report, there are 2 possible fixes here

  1. Someone says making sure the 2 boxes - Download updates while installing and Install this third-party software are NOT ticked during the installation (worked for him).

http://linuxforums.org.uk/MGalleryItem.php?id=1495

And

  1. Is to boot to the LiveCD desktop via “Try Ubuntu”, open a terminal, and enter:
sudo rm -v /usr/lib/ubiquity/apt-setup/generators/40cdrom

then hit enter (to delete the 40cdrom script).

Then close the terminal, and run the installation from the “Install Ubuntuicon on the desktop (ie. without rebooting).

Personally I’d try both at the same time… do option 2, then when the installer runs and you get to the above pictured screen… leave those boxes unticked… they can easily be added AFTER the installation.

I think what’s happening is when you select Install this third-party software during the installation, the installer is attempting to find this software on the CD drive, rather than looking on the USB drive.

It appears to be all working
Where do I update from & get the extras that weren’t installed?

[EDIT]
Seems to be updating automatically
[EDIT 2]
Think I’m getting the hang of it now
Many thanks for all your help, you’ve been fantastically patient
Moving to my PC, will I need to change the settings when installing as well; or is it possible to run straight from USB now?

(",)

Update Manager will run automatically when updates are available (or you can start it manually from the Application Lens).

As for mp3, flash, etc. support… see here:
http://linuxforums.org.uk/frequently-asked-questions/install-flashplayer-java-and-mp3-support-in-ubuntu/

BTW, wait for Update Manager to finish, and close it BEFORE following the instructions at that link… Synaptic WILL NOT install anything whilst the Update Manager is open.

To open Synaptic in Unity…

Click the Application lens on the sidebar… enter synaptic in the search box… click on the Synaptic Package Manager icon

Moving to my PC, will I need to change the settings when installing as well; or is it possible to run straight from USB now?

The deletion of the 40cdrom script will NOT survive a reboot of the LiveUSB… ie. when you reboot the LiveUSB, it will be back, so you will have to delete it again.

BUT

It may not be necessary on your other PC’s.

It was necessary to remove the 40cdrom for the PC installation
Just a couple of final issues…
On my PC some of the buttons for the keyboard don’t work (Page up/down;Home;End;Scroll Lock &c…) any ideas? I used the auto keyboard detect on installation
On the laptop, I followed your earlier advice & installed the wireless program, the router is broadcasting for wireless but I can’t seem to connect to it?

(",)

Keyboard…

Open the Application lens and search for Keyboard … Click the Keyboard icon to start the “Keyboard Preferences” application.

Go to the Layouts tab.

Make sure United Kingdom is in the top part of the window

Use Keyboard models: to select your keyboard model, or just use Generic 105-key (intl) PC for a generic keyboard.

  1. Install firmware-b43-installer and b43-fwcutter packages:
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer
  1. Uninstall the bcm-kernel-source package:
sudo apt-get remove bcm-kernel-source
  1. In the Application Lens, search for Additional Drivers, and start it

If the Broadcom STA wireless Driver is listed, remove/inactivate it.

  1. Reboot.

  2. Go back to Additional Drivers, and if necessary activate the b43 driver.

upon return to the ‘additional drivers’ after reboot- there is no b43 driver to install?!

and I take it wireless still isn’t working?

can you try:

sudo lshw -C network

again.

is there a hardware switch anywhere in the laptop to turn on wireless ?

There is a key to turn wireless on/off but doesn’t seem to do anything since Ubuntu install (usually a blue light comes on when active)
[EDIT]
It’s just above the keyboard, along with vol+/-, mute &c… keys

Eating my dinner… back soon, but it looks like the right drivers are loaded… is nothing available in the NetworkManager icon (by clock) ?
