HP Vista Laptop conversion

Just ran vacuum over key, then pressed & it lit up!!
Everything is now running hunky-dory ;D
Thank you again for your help
Think that’s all my problems & issues dealt with now

(",)

You’re welcome

Spoke too soon… rebooted wi-fi laptop (one just sorted) & now it won’t/can’t connect to wi-fi
Keeps on asking for password- I have entered it correctly but it fails to connect then asks again…

Have you enabled auto-login by any chance ?
(where you’re not asked for a password at bootup)

is it the “keyring” password it’s asking for ?

Uhmmm ? Probably not, but I selected the little ‘umbrella’ with my network next to it & then entered password

(",)

When you boot the computer, are you asked for your password BEFORE you can get to the desktop ?

is it the “KEYRING” password it’s asking for ? … or the WEP/WPA key ?

Sorry- yeah it has auto-login, straight from power-up

Click on my network name & it asks for ‘authentication key to access wireless network’ I input & select connect
It spins around in a little circle then asks for my authentication key, again
Both times for WPA/WPA2 key
& it’s definitely the correct password/key as I connected to router to ensure

What I may suggest is, changing your default WEP/WPA (2) key. It’s very case sensitive and also sensitive to how may characters should be there. 8 is the minimum for WPA/WPA2 IIRC.

It’s already a non-default password, with upper & lower case, numbers & symbols, but it’s something I remember easily
I have sat here & typed it with the router menu on my PC displaying said password whilst I type it into the laptop… just to double check
It still isn’t connecting though

OK, either way…

Click the NetworkManager icon (by clock) and select Edit Connections

Go to the Wireless tab

Delete the current connection(s)

Click Add

and Manually enter your connection details.

When you’re done, and you save the connection… if you are asked to enter a “KEYRING” password, leave it BLANK, it will complain about unsafe storage, but accept it anyway.

Your other option is to disable auto-login… delete the Wireless connection… and let it set itself up automatically again.

But you will have to enter your Ubuntu login password every bootup.

Didn’t request a KEYRING & it seems to be running okay now…
I selected for it to connect automatically
Is this, this problem solved?

(",)

I dunno… you tell me !!!

Have you tried rebooting and seeing what happens

Was doing so…
& it’s now asking for keyring password (that I haven’t set), hitting enter doesn’t work…

[EDIT]
Entered regular password & it now seems to be working fine

Thanks again, probably catch you in an hour/day, the way I’m going :-[
Although once I get used to it all I’m sure it’ll be fine, had the same problem when WinXP came out, couldn’t do f-a!!

Disabling auto-login will stop it asking for a keyring password… as the password is entered at login.

Also DELETING the connection again, but this time MANUALLY entering the connection settings, will prompt it to ask you for a keyring password… if you then leave it blank, it won’t ask again.

Re-did & it still didn’t ask for keyring ID
Will just enter same password as last time if it asks again…

OK, try this…

Open a terminal and run

mv -v ~/.gnome2/keyrings ~/.gnome2/keyrings-old

hit enter.

REBOOT

After you reboot you’ll be asked for your wireless networks WPA/WEP encryption key (Wireless Network Authentication Required)

Enter your WEP/WPA key, and click Connect

You will then be prompted for a New Keyring Password

Leave it BLANK, and click OK

It will warn you about encryption… just click the Use Unsafe Storage button.

You shouldn’t be asked for your keyring password again.

Done, only it’s now repeatedly asking me for WPA/WPA2 key :o

Was originally going to come on here to comment that I didn’t move the mouse for 5mins & it automatically unconnected from wi-fi. Annoyingly, even removing profiles, re-booting & making profiles from scratch I still couldn’t get on- kept on asking for WPA/WPA2 key
& so I appear to be back @ square one re: logging onto wi-fi…

(",)

OK,

First try deleting the wireless connection again, and setting it up again, and see if it will accept your WPA key

if not…

mv -v ~/.gnome2/keyrings ~/.gnome2/keyrings-nonworking

then

mv -v ~/.gnome2/keyrings-old ~/.gnome2/keyrings

and after a reboot, you should be back where you started.

After doing the above… and rebooting.

Click NetworkManager icon, highlight the connection and select Edit

Make sure there are ticks in both
Connect Automatically
and
Available for all users
click Close

in Applications Lens, search for Screensaver, and start it

remove the tick from
Lock screen when screensaver is active
and/or change the screensaver timeout.

Had already removed tick from Screensaver & changed to 45mins
Still not connecting to wi-fi
No keyring request

(",)

OK, where are you now… did you undo the changes ?

is the wireless working when you first boot ? … if not, delete the connection in NetworkManager, and create a new one.

Did you try changing the Power Management settings from the Screensaver application ?
