Install Firefox 5 on an Acer Aspire One running Linpus Lite Linux

yippee I’ve done it! your beautiful! thank you!

I registered for this website just so I could say THANK YOU for your great tutorial for how to upgrade to firefox 5 and update flash. I followed both to the letter and they worked fantastically.

I just restarted school and I got out my old netbook and I keep having problems with the school websites and flash. I was considering updating the whole thing to Ubuntu 11.04 but I didn’t really want to both with something that extreme when all I really needed was a newer version of firefox and flash.

Thanks again so very very much.

Hi familyguy, welcome to the forum.

You’re very welcome, and thanks for responding … it’s always nice to hear from people that the instructions helped

;DMark- you are my hero! My netbook is now again a wonderful machine and not a doorstop. Your instructions even worked for such a Noob as I (and that’s saying a lot: it took me a few tries to figure out that to ‘run’ the commands I had to press Enter ???) My son is going to be so thrilled that it’s working and hopefully he’ll stop saying’ Mom, I keep telling you - just get a Mac) I’m about to go surfing with joy now. You’re brilliant, you are, for all your effort and patience. :-*

Hi 8gamemix, welcome to the forum

I’m happy it’s breathed new life into your netbook  … Though I doubt (if your kids are anything like mine) that your son will stop wanting a “Mac” as they are more of a status symbol than anything else… IMHO Apple stuff is just overpriced rubbish… that said, when I was a kid I flatly refused to wear anything other than Wrangler or Levi’s jeans and Adidas trainers, so nothing really changes

I’ve also added a bit to the original instructions about pressing the Enter key to ‘run’ the commands… thanks for pointing that out

Hi Mark,

I have an Acer Aspire One (with the linux linpus lite OS) A110.
I haven’t used it for ages since getting my laptop, and because I could never connect it to the internet. However, just booted it up today and amazingly managed to connect it to the internet  but i kept getting told on sites that my browser needed updating. I tried following the online prompts and what-not for installing the new firefox (and also google chrome, opera, and safari) but nothing happend and was still being propted to update the browser.
This was annoying as it meant I could view my emails on it etc… so I found this walkthrough on how to upgrade it. I followed them through, copy and pasting the commands into the terminal run box, until it got up to naming the username and that command failed.
I then rebooted the netbook as the guide says and tried opening the browser assuming all was good and updated, BUT nothing happened!!!
I now have no browser after just managing to connect it!!! Arrrggg!!!
What do I have to do get my browser back and opening up and to update it (a fools guide would be welcome  )???

Thanks
Andy

OK, did you read the first line of this topic ?

This topic is now outdated... there are now instructions for installing Firefox 6 here: http://linuxforums.org.uk/netbooks/install-firefox-6-on-an-acer-aspire-one-running-linpus-lite-linux/

Firefox 5 is no longer available for download … so the wget command (to download it) would have failed.

Follow the instructions for Firefox 6 … that IS still available … once Firefox 6 is installed, in Firefox 6 go to Help > About Firefox and it should update itself to Firefox 7.0.1

BTW, to make things easier, you should still be able to start the original version of Firefox (2.0.0.14) by running this in a terminal:

/usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.14/firefox

Thanks Mark,

I should have seen that first bit!! Firefox has now been installed!!!

Andy

No problem … have you also updated the flashplayer ?

See this posting:

No I haven’t. I just follow the steps given on that link right?

Yup

the post says that if the first code fails (mkdir ~/.mozilla/plugins) just move onto the next one, however, this one didn’t fail but the next one beginning with cd did. Do just move on to the next code?

No go to chat … link at top of every page.

Problem resolved in chat … commands weren’t being entered into a terminal.
