Internet Connection Sharing - Support Question

My NAS is upstairs next to the lappy, and the router is downstairs, I think you see the picture. ::slight_smile:

Webmin is no good without a internet connection. ???

Yes I am getting the picture, Is there any reason why you cannot place the NAS downstairs next to the router?
As for webmin, you can download the packages to your laptop, copy to NAS (via USB) then do the install from local file on the NAS.

Because I only have one VGA monitor, which is shared between the lappy for dual-monitors and the NAS for now.

When I get it up and running I just want to SSH RDP/VNC to it without the need of the monitor.

Webmin does just that  only over your local network.

Yup … webmin

Perfect… for when the thing is actually on the local network. :stuck_out_tongue:

Then plug your NAS into the router, then it will be on the local network.

Yeh, what is the reason you’re not plugging it into the router directly … as it’s headless, and you’re going to be using webmin, it doesn’t need to be in the same room as you

As I said, you’re making this very hard for yourself … I understand funds are an issue, but for the time being, just leave karmic on it, install webmin (or even VLC/RDP) … and bung it next to the router.

The problem with bunging downstairs is kids. I’d have to buy MoD laser systems, and motion sensor flooring just to be sure it wouldn’t get touched. My little brother even though he’s 6 likes to be in at electrics. I swear he’s going to be a electrician when he grows up. :stuck_out_tongue:

So, if I give it a static IP and then bung it downstairs with webmin on it it’ll work?

Yes, it should work ™. You should be able to access it by (using your browser on laptop) on:

https://server:10000/

Replace “server” with your NAS hostname or static IP address you set up.

Question though. How would one log in, because it’s password protected? Surely you can’t log in over the network? :o

It will ask for username + password hence https://

Of course you can … how do you think people administer headless servers, or I administer my VPS, or you administer your router come to that ?

I see, seems you guys have an answer for everyone of my questions.

JEEZ … made me jump then :o

You’ve never seen that before? Haha.

How easy is the webmin setup?

EDIT: Downloading it just now.

It’s a .deb … just double-click it

Yes… double click it…

It won’t install because the dependencies it needs aren’t installed, and I can’t install them because there’s no net access… so again we’re back at square 1.

Circles are fun… ::slight_smile:

Right. Screw this. I’m taking the server downstairs and also the monitor and I’ll update this son of a :censored:.

I’m even contemplating a FAI with 12.04 Server Beta 2.

ARGH! The source lists are so out of date, Canonical has removed them from their server, meaning no updates, meaning no webmin until I install Ubuntu Server 12.04 today once I get the new keyboard.

@Mark: FYI, It’s Jaunty that’s on it. Not Karmic. I did tell you that sometime ago, but you persisted it wasn’t. :stuck_out_tongue:
