Internet Connection Sharing - Support Question

No I didn’t … if you remember correctly, you said “9.10 Jaunty” … I pointed out 9.10 was Karmic … and YOU said, “it must be Karmic then”.

Did I? Do apologies if I did. Got me a new P/S2 keyboard AND 10 blank-CD’s to stock up in case I need 'em. Time to go put Ubuntu 12.04 server on the NAS.

Good luck

Not a happy bunny. I select the language, and then “Install Ubuntu Server” after that all I get is a black blank screen.

I tried editing the boot stanza, but it never showed nothing when I boot from that.

I left it for half an hour thinking it’s probably doing background checks, but nope no progress.

Is it a bad burn, or just not my day?

Dunno … is there an option to “check disk for defects” in the server edition ?

Yeah I think so, I’ll see what’s what. If it all else fails, I’ll just burn it again and hope that it works. Otherwise I’ll turn into Vegeta from Dragonball Z and go berserk.

Could this be a backlight issue? Have you got an Intel GPU?
You could try:

Older Intel video card: i915.modeset=1 or i915.modeset=0

or
nVidia: nomodeset
Generic: xforcevesa

Yeh, would be handy to know more about the hardware.

You could always attach the output from:

sudo lshw

There’s actually 3GB of RAM installed, but it’s only noticing around 2GB of it.

Looking at your results the “product: RC410 [Radeon Xpress 200]” should be supported (Have same on laptop Xpress 200M)
Also the missing ram could have been allocated to the GPU in bios.

Just an other thought, I had this same problem not that long ago when tried to run a 64bit live distro on a 32bit computer.
Screen just gone blank after the boot option was selected. No blinking cursor or anything else.

Well it’s the 32-bit ISO on the disc, so kinda confused.

If that’s where the missing RAM is going then that’s alright. Just hope it hasn’t grown legs and walked. Lol.

Have you tried removing that extra memory stick ? … which doesn’t seem right to me, I can’t see the mobo allocating 1GB+ to the GFX card on an older system

Have you tried the boot options?
For ATI you could add to boot options:

radeon.modeset=0

As for the missing ram it appears that the motherboard D102GGC2 can only support up to 2 GiB

*-memory description: System Memory physical id: 14 slot: System board or motherboard size: 2GiB capacity: 2GiB

The video appears to be on board Integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 200 with
up to 128 MB of shared video memory

SeZo’s right … the MoBo only supports 2GB RAM (well spotted BTW)

See the spec sheet:
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/15112/eng/D102GGC2_TechProdSpec.pdf

So ditch the other stick.

and as he says, try adding radeon.modeset=0 as a kernel boot parameter.

Kernel boot parameter didn’t work. Think I’ll just put 11.10 server on it instead and then upgrade once it’s offically released. :frowning:

In other news: I think when my electricity cut-out this morning it’s damaged the MoBo. It won’t boot up into the hard-drives, but even worse and pretty worryingly, it won’t boot up into the BIOS.

Just hangs at the Mobo bootloader screen.

So I’ve pulled out the PSU and changed the cables. Put in another PSU and still the same problem. Also took out the extra stick. Nothing.

Gonna leave it off for a while and try again later.

This has been nothing but trouble. :frowning:

If you disconnect EVERYTHING from the MoBo … hard drives/floppy drives/Optical dirves/sound card/modem/etc. … and leave just what’s necessary to access the BIOS … gfx card/mobo/keyboard … can you access the BIOS now ?

If not … with everything that’s unnecessary still disconnected, try a BIOS reset.

Ok I think I’ve found what’s up. It looks as if that because the hardware the NAS runs on, Ubuntu 12.04 looks as if it doesn’t support it anymore. So I think I’ll probably be best downloading the Lucid Server LTS as it will probably work.

The 12.04 Beta 2 disc is fine, I checked it with my lappy and my brothers and both said “Disc is valid”.

Mobo seems fine as well, just doesn’t like the disc at times.

Could it possibly be the CD/DVD drive in the NAS box … but yeh you try 10.04 and an upgrade.

Can you answer me a question … is “quiet splash” still part of the server edition kernel boot line ?

And if so, have you removed it to try get a cue as to what’s going on ?

Is there an alternate install disk for the server edition ?

Ubuntu Lucid Lynx Server i.e. 10.04 Server installed perfectly fine. :o

Although I have one problem. The network. :frowning:

I accidentally selected manually configure later, and now I can’t get updates from the repos.

I’ve tried setting it manually following the guide on the Ubuntu Wiki -

https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/network-configuration.html

i’m on a local-loopback according to ifconfig

I also noticed that lshw shows that the network is disabled, but whenever I try to enable it manually using sudo ifup eth0 I get the output:

Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0

sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces

and

sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf

What static IP do you want to give it, and what is your routers IP ?
