iPad causing system crash (SOLVED)

Well, one or two here will recall my iPad problems from a few days ago. To refresh, what’s happening is that when I connect my iPad to my Mint 16 (Mate) system, it will occasionally work but more often than not cause an abrupt power-down. Sometimes it will reboot, other times it will require me to switch off my computer power before I can restart it with the power button on the tower.

Anyway, it was starting to cause all sorts of problems with my USB wifi adaptor dongle which led to much frustration. I changed to Ubuntu yesterday and had the same problem, so you’d think it’s hardware related. The funny thing is, though, that I’d been using my iPad before on this same system (on XP) for months without any problem. So, I guess my question is, could there be an issue with how Linux deals with the USB ports? Am I “overloading” it or something?

I’m back on Mint now, as I love the distro but I’m reluctant to try the iPad for obvious reasons. I feel like I’ve been installing/un-installing Linux for a whole week and never really getting to the nub of the problem. The only other case I’ve read about online was someone whose Windows install was doing the same, turned out to be a driver conflict.

Unlikely to be a hardware problem … but could be a driver issue.

What software have you installed for managing the iPad in Linux ?

The libimobiledevice utilities came packaged with Mint 16, been using those.

Next time you plug in the iPad and it crashes, reboot however you need to, then attach the files
/var/log/dmesg.0
to your next reply.

Just as a matter of interest … what happens if you boot with the iPad attached ?

I’m guessing this is something to do with the way libimobiledevice (or fuse) is mounting the iPad.

Does your iPad register as a USB mass storage device, or an MTP device

Ok, I’ll just do that now. Not sure if it’s a USB Mass Storage Device but two dark monitor-style icons appear as mounted items on my desktop and in my “Computer” folder, alongside my drive. One appears to function as a camera would (ie, it asks if I want to import photos from the iPad) and the other functions like a stripped-down iTunes where I have access to files used by selected Apps.

Sounds like it’s mounting as an MTP device.

Would be handy to knw if the system will boot with the iPad already attached

And, just like that (first attempt with today’s fresh Mint 16 install), it works fine. Typical! :o

This has happened before. The first couple of times it’s OK, then problems. When (and, if) it does it again, I’ll post that dmesg file. I’ll also see what happens if I boot with the iPad connected. It’s late, so cheers for now Mark.

Forgot to add, there was no notification of a USB Mass Storage Device having been added.

I’m still convinced it was that stupid UFW thing but I could be proved wrong. This is the first time I haven’t installed it before using my iPad and I’m not going to this time. ;D

When it works without crashing, pst the output from:

mount

and if possible, unplug it … replug it … then send the output from:

dmesg | tail -n 30

Ok, Mark, the iPad mounted fine again this lunchtime. Here are the output messages:

Is everything behaving as it should here?

You get a single USB disconnect on the iPad, but that’s’ not uncommon.

Now it would be handy to see the dmesg.0 log file after a crash for comparison.

Ok, this is new. I normally use a program called gThumb to import my photos from a USB card reader. As of this afternoon, gThumb will no longer import my photos (even though the option dialog box appears as normal). In fact, gThumb won’t start at all. I only mention this as it is USB-related, it might be unrelated to the iPad problem. I’ve removed and purged gThumb from my computer and re-installed it but it is still unresponsive.

what happens if you run gthumb from the command line:

gthumb

?

Ok, so the inevitable happened and it crashed. Here’s the /var/log/dmesg.0 file:

Mint booted fine with the iPad plugged-in and mounted on the desktop.

Ok, gThumb started but I couldn’t click any of the menus etc (gThumb is also the program which, by default, asks to import files from my iPad when it mounts).

Here’s the “mount” output after booting with the iPad attached, in case it’s any use:

/dev/sda1 on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
none on /sys/fs/cgroup type tmpfs (rw)
none on /sys/fs/fuse/connections type fusectl (rw)
none on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw)
none on /sys/kernel/security type securityfs (rw)
udev on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,mode=0755)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=0620)
tmpfs on /run type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,size=10%,mode=0755)
none on /run/lock type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,size=5242880)
none on /run/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev)
none on /run/user type tmpfs (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,size=104857600,mode=0755)
none on /sys/fs/pstore type pstore (rw)
/dev/sda5 on /home type ext4 (rw)
systemd on /sys/fs/cgroup/systemd type cgroup (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev, none, name=systemd)
gvfsd-fuse on /run/user/1000/gvfs type fuse.gvfsd-fuse (rw,nosuid,nodev,user=lee)

Will gthumb start cleanly if the iPad is NOT attached ?

gThumb won’t start at all now, even from the terminal.

There may not be a link but I installed RawStudio yesterday (since removed), which performed a similar task to gThumb (but for RAW files rather than JPGs). gThumb still pops-up as the default photo importer in the dialog box, though, when I plug-in my USB card reader (even though it won’t start).

Ok, gThumb working properly today. Curious.
