Are you running it as a persistent LiveUSB from the card, or have you installed it to the internal HDD/SSD ?
Interesting. Thanks for confirming that for me.
hi mark, running it from internal hdd/ssd, it did give me the options to test it first though. went through tutorial, done everything bar the right hand card reader which i will do later. great tutorial mark, very easy to follow. as a matter of interest, is the desktop meant to be empty, with the menu bar in bottom left to access any programmes? or did i miss something in the set up? also is there a tutorial for printer drivers etc?
once again thanks for all the guidance
your welcome BKS
I’d imagine because the ISO is only something short of 500MB that there aren’t many apps that come with the installation. Part of keeping it lightweight me thinks. Although I amn’t for certain until I test it myself.
Yep, it’s a “Cloud” distro … so most apps are run from the internet, such as gmail, google-docs etc … but they run in their own window.
There’s nothing to stop you installing the full blown apps to the HDD though, such as LibeOffice, Thunderbird, etc. … as it uses the Ubuntu repos.
mark, think i’m gonna need a helping hand with the printer driver, just bought an hp email printer so should work fine. is there a way of creating short cuts on the desktop? it doesnt drag and drop like windows i guess?
cheers, john
Shortcuts to what ?
[EDIT]
If you mean add icons from the menu’s … it’s in the Peppermint tutorial isn’t it ?
just right-click a menu item and select “Add to Desktop”
Am I correct in thinking Peppermint 2 is based on Ubuntu 11.10? If so, I believe the option of creating “shortcuts” or more commonly known in the Linux world as “Launchers” was broken. You can still do it by terminal command though.
gnome-desktop-item-edit ~/Desktop/ --create-new
You’ll most likely need to install the Gnome Panel dependencies though so:
sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends gnome-panel
It’s probably best if you wait for Mark to come in here.
if it is i guess i missed it, sorry if its been covered already, i’m right clicking chromium from the menu and it just opens a new page.
RIGHT-click it in the menu … then select “Add to desktop”
Not Left-click … if you right-click it, you should see a drop menu with 2 options:-
Add to desktop
and
Properties
[EDIT]
OK, just in case you’re clicking the wrong place.
Bottom left of your screen on the panel you’ll see a Peppermint icon and the word “menu” … click that, move your cursor up to “Internet”, move your cursor across to “Chromium Web Browser”, RIGHT-CLICK your mouse/trackpad, click “Add to desktop” … there should now be a Chromium icon on the desktop.
[EDIT 2]
For your Kodak ESP 5250 (AIO) printer … down lad ths file:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cupsdriverkodak/files/latest/download
then doube-click it … when gdebi opens, click the “Install” button,
Once that’s installed, go to menu>System Tools>Printing to set up your printer.
Just for information, the homepage of the c2esp driver is here:
and files (on sourceforge) here:
There is also a SANE backend there that may allow you to use the scanner.
It is also (after installing the above driver) possible to set up the printer through the CUPS interface by going to this address:
http://localhost:631
in your web browser.
then going to Administration>Add Printer
BTW, when your browser prompts for your username and password … that’s your Peppermint username and password.
yeah was clicking in wrong place, thanks mark, will try out the printer too
this may sound obvious but how do i change my peppermint installation to uk settings, seems during set up i hit us and not uk, the clock is 5 hours behind too,
thanks, john
when i click it in the menu its greyed out, with a padlock on click to make changes button
The padlock is there so you don’t change any settings by accident, just hit the padlock and change the time to UK settings, usually just enter your location and it’ll do the work for you. The hit the padlock again and close the window. Done.
I’m going to apologise before I say this but …
Didn’t you take that as a hint … click the padlock to make changes
thanks BKS, yeah i should have figured that one out.
mark, its true, i’m not the sharpest when it comes to these sort of things. should have a go at more stuff but scared i will do some damage that will cause me problems
You won’t progress unless you take risks. :
Just use a bit of common sense and read up on things before you do anything system-wise and always backup your backup. You can never be too sure.
Hey, screwing up your system, then fixing it, is the best way to learn … and half the fun
[EDIT]
And I wonder why people think I’m a bit of a geek
