I am being a bit selfish here but my vote would go for Birmingham (live near to).
Have you thought to tie up with any LUG’s operating in the UK?
A quick search turns up Birmingham Linux User Group (LUG). http://birmingham.lug.org.uk/
They meet at Birmingham Science Park Aston (near Aston University) http://bsp-a.com/
and then for a nash they going to the Sack of Potatoes. pubs.com - pubs Resources and Information.
Do not know about the prices though but cannot be too expensive if it is on the campus.
Also it all depends how big you want to make it and choose the venue accordingly.
There don’t seem to be many takers so far, and geographically scattered at that.
If advertising more widely, it might be helpful to indicate the topics & level of discussion to be expected so that newbies like I am don’t fall at the first fence.
I’m near Oxford, so B’ham, Bristol are fine for me.
Let’s start at the beginning then.
What exactly are we wanting to achieve with this event?
Who do we want to attend?
How will it be advertised?
How will it be presented?
Sure … just needs numbers to make it worthwhile and consensus on a location …
After having been to similar UG type events in the past I think it needs an overnight option with cheap accommodation with stuff over two days … gotta make it worthwhile for people travelling a long way …
Perhaps it would be helpful, nearer the agreed time, to indicate the proposed topics for discussion and the expected level.
This might help newbies in deciding whether or not to attend. It’s very useful to venture into something a bit deeper than one’s present ability, but too deep can be very off-putting.
So it is definitely now 2013, and with my daughter having a midday nap I thought I would have a look around the ol’ forum and see what needed my input (its everything right?)
