This keeps coming back up, but whilst there does seem to be a certain level of interest I remain sceptical that it could be organised in a way where a venue could be settled on … the main forum members are just too spread out.
Maybe I’m wrong though ?
I think the idea of a get together is a good one, but I think Mark’s right in so far as the members are too spread out, even though we live on a small island the distance between myself and Mark for example is roughly 450 miles so even a midway point would be a long journey, also timing would be a factor, we all have busy lives and selecting a time to suit everyone would be difficult to say the least
discussion and the expected level.
This might help newbies in deciding whether or not to attend. It's very useful to venture into something a bit deeper than one's present ability, but too deep can be very off-putting.
I think Keith has a fair point here, I know from my own standpoint that I would probably feel out of my depth unless it was to be more of a social/recreational event.
Perhaps it would be more appealing to some members if it coincided with some other event ie Blackpool Illuminations, A day at the races or some other national event.
Just my thoughts

Social / recreational definitely, I’d only be turning up for the beer … :o , but maybe more of a tek expo than seaside lightshow ??
Just as a matter of interest, there is a service called the “Mega-Bus” that runs from Cardiff to London, and if you book 2 weeks or so in advance a return ticket is only £8 … and the late return leaves London at 11pm, so you can get a pretty long day out of it …
Looking at the website this is a national service, so a return from Manchester just for example is only £9 return.
- does sort of make London the fairly cost-effective from a travelling point of view, albeit a venue might be more interesting to come by.
(that said, West-end pubs tend to be fairly empty mid-week evenings …)
