Here’s a thought … can you BORROW the known good PCI adapter from another PC, and see if the USB card will work in that one ?
Have you simply tried plugging the PCI card into a different slot ?
(some PCI slots share interrupts badly)

I never tried that, but I can do that
What appears to happening is that one of the USB adaptors (Sumvision) seems to be taking out the main USB ports when plugged in so I’m now loading up PM3 Live with the other USB adaptor (Belkin) to see how it fairs
I got the Belkin connected in PM4 but it was very slow if it’s slow in PM3, I’ll try the PCI in another slot and report back
Sorry for all the confusion
Graeme
Sorry for all the confusion
don’t be … it’s a weird problem (or series of problems) :o
I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’m having problems thinking straight in this heat 8)
–
ok I booted up PM3 with the Belkin USB adaptor and it connected no problem with the best signal strength I yet had (100%) normally I’ve been getting aroung 30 to 40 % but it wont connect to the internet, I can try the PCI in another slot to see what happens, can I hot plug or will I have to shut down ?
What happens if you run:
ping -c 5 173.194.41.99
PCI is NOT hot plugable … attempting to do so could SERIOUSLY damage the card and the motherboard
–
5 packets transmitted 4 recieved 20% packet loss
Well that’s still pants
Did you ever try switching to WEP in the router instead of WPA ?
(or even trying temporarily without security)
[EDIT] and are you SURE this isn’t just the position of the PC in the house ?
I mean, it’s not close to anything with a motor, or a strong magnetic field ?
Well that's still pants:)
You gotta laugh
Should I try the PCI card in another slot it might tell us something ?? or should I do what I’ve been tempted to do all evening and throw the fu@@@ng thing out the window ?
see the edit above first.

No I never changed any security settings because all the other PC’s were running so well
but if you think it will help I’ll give it a go ?
It’s not close to any magnetic field but it is right in front of a metal radiator which I suppose could be bouncing the signal
Could that be possible ?
Could that be possible ?
Yes it could … particularly if the radiator is between the PC and the router
I’d also still like to know which driver the USB adapter is using:
sudo lshw -C network
and
lsusb
Yes it could .. particularly if the radiator is between the PC and the router
Well it’s not exactly between the PC and the router the radiator is directly behind the PC only inches away almost touching
the router is in the attic almost directly above the PC no more than 10 feet away

One last thing I’d like you to do tonight … run:
dmesg > ~/dmesg.txt
you’ll now find a file called dmesg.txt in your home folder … can you attach that to your next posting, and I’ll go through it tomorrow and see if I can spot anything
And yeh … at some point it would be nice to know if switching to WEP (or disabling security altogether) helps
But remember, if you switch to WEP, you’ll have to change the key in ALL PC’s … and preferably have a PC that you can connefct to the router by ethernet in cse you can’t get any of them to connect with WEP … though that’s unlikely
just as an update it’s now connecting to the internet although kinda slow but that may be because it’s a live session

OK I’ve done that and the file is in the home folder
so presumably I’ll have to keep this pc powered up because I’m in a live session and if I shutdown the file will be gone ??
Well you’re either going to have to find a way to get it off and posted on here … or boot into PM4 and do the same
