You could do some cool expriments with the Rasberry Pi
and write about it.

He missed out Peltier cooling … putting the Pi on top of his fridge
Not exactly a PC but nonetheless (according to the makers) can run Ubuntu
Always Innovating HDMI Dongle:
The HDMI Dongle is available immediately for licensing. It comes with an optimized hardware design and a fully Open Source software solution including Angstrom, Ubuntu and Android.http://www.alwaysinnovating.com/company/pressrelease-4.htm http://www.alwaysinnovating.com/products/hdmidongle.htm
The HDMI Dongle is expected to hit the shelves with a first licensee during Summer 2012.
Prices expected to be MSRP from $49 to $99 (depending on configuration)
Yet another:
Allwinner A10 Android 4.0 mini PC available from AliExpress for $74.
As I hoped, there seem to be a raft of them hitting the market in China … it remains to be seen if any of them will make it over here, and how much that will add to the price … but I’m hoping their existence will spur on budget suppliers like Trust, Xenta, Sumvision, etc. … to run with the idea … heck, it could be a way for them to enter the cheap PC market :o
BTW, nicely spotted (again) … they both look very interesting for differing reasons
Seen this?
Yeah… Have you seen the price?
Yeh, I spotted those on Linux.co.uk … but agree with SeZo about the price … I think they’ll be hard pushed to sell many, with the raft of similar devices now appearing at MUCH lower prices … unless of course they have something to distinguish themselves that I’m missing.
The base model is similarly specced (maybe slightly lower) to the FXI Cotton Candy … which is expected to be around £125, and even that seems somewhat overpriced now.
Though the 4 USB ports will come in handy (compared to the Cotton Candy’s 2xMale and 1xFemale microUSB)
This TizzBird F30 looks interesting but dunno about the price and availability:

Hmm … that it does, but there are LOADS of Android media players coming out … will it run, or is it easily crackable to run Linux though ? … this it part of (my) criteria for inclusion here
will it run, or is it easily crackable to run Linux though ? .. this it part of (my) criteria for inclusion here ;)I am still researching this one. But I like the One Touch HDD installation...
[Edit]
Scrap that one, it is too expensive.
Mmm, I thought the price was good for the spec, indeed I’ll probably get one next week.
You “can” get cheap stuff, indeed I can get an “xPad” for around £75 with the same spec as an iPad4 … if I want to buy it from China … however, although the paper spec might be the same - it won’t actually “be” the same … (article on this in BBC/Click this morning)
If anyone wants to order in Chines, let me know and stick up their catalogue (!)
I’d be interested to hear how you get on with it … if you have time, any chance of a review ?
One other hopeful in this field:
And at $49 it seems quite a good value. Yet to find out if it is able to run Ubuntu.
And yes, it is a ARM device.
Further reading here:
WOW :o … the inclusion of a HDMI and VGA port makes this particularly interesting, not to mention the 4 USB’s and Audio i/O ports.
I’m going to look into these … I want one or two … now just need to find where I can get one.
Hell, I’ll even have a go at getting Linux on it myself.
[EDIT]
OK, found the APC website:
http://apc.io/
And registered to be notified when they’re accepting orders.
I have to say, at this rate Raspberry Pi are going to be hard pushed to survive … which would be a real pity … no matter how much the press suggest they are going after different markets, Pi for enthusiasts, APC more aimed at multimediia PC builds, IMHO that’s rubbish, they’ll definitely be competing with each other … and sadly, with all those ports, and the fact that they shouldn’t have the same supply issues, the VIA APC seems to be in the stronger position … now just need someone to figure out the Linux install
And for those that are interested … a video:-
All these ARM mini-PC’s… I want one. Rasberry Pi would be nice, but I’ll settle for whatever I can get.
Someone should make/edit a post with a list of all the devices listed with their price, as I don’t feel like reading through everything, and I don’t think a lot of other people would too… Lists are handy…
Heh …“Someone” ? ??? … are you feeling unusually lazy today ?
Yeh… “Someone” ;D… Yes, just a bit. It’s that large kebab I had and 2ltr bottle of Irn-Bru.
Oooo … Now I want a kebab (no rabbit food, chilli, lemon, garlic mayo, and onions) … now look what you’ve done
If you read the topic (oops sorry ), you’ll see most of them (particularly the cheaper ones) aren’t currently on sale, at least over here yet … so a “list” would be pretty pointless ATM, as exact prices and where to buy would be impossible to quote.
Currently, this topic is as much about what’s coming as what’s already here … but the real scope is which of the cheap devices that are available or coming will “easily” run Linux as well as, or instead of Android … it’s here for people to discuss what they can find out, not as a one stop shop (at least for now)
Oh … and what is it with Scots and Irn-Bru ???
It’s a Scottish thing, Irn-Bru is Scottish so it’s basically our national drink, lol.
EDIT: Just been looking more into the Rasberry Pi. I really want one, and Brian Lunduke has one to give away in a competition! I dunno if it’s Model A or Model B though. I want the Model B version. :-\
I’ve been on the waiting list for a RasPi for ages. I can’t wait to get one and build my own gargoyle computer (one applaud for the first person to get that reference!!)
